I enjoyed it and even learned a few things I didn't know. I did, however, think that it got bogged down with too much detail from time to time. It slowed progress in reading and didn't really add that much to the overall story.

Never the less, I give it a strong thumbs up. It shows the good, the bad, and the ugly and kind of makes Walt seem more human to me!

The Gabler book was okay. I haven't finished it and like to read it here and there.

I have a feeling we're never going to get a true biography of Walt.

I didn't get it because I had heard/read that it reads like a textbook, at times. Isn't there a new bio out there? I read something here about it. I can't seem to locate the thread, though. It seemed a bit more to my liking. I'll keep looking.

onlyme, the book does go into great detail, sometimes greater detail than I have the patience or the interest for. I'll just skip a 1/2 a page or so, and then something will catch my attention. So far it's been a generally terrific read.

At times, I found the book painful to read and felt the victim of information overload.

The newer Michael Barrier biography is better written, a heckuva lot more accurate, and doesn't indulge in so much irresponsible speculation.

It's also shorter.

Not too surprising that I disagree with you, mawnck. I found nothing irresponsible about the speculation that Gabler included. Most times I completely agreed with him, but I think he made it clear when he was talking fact and when he was conjecturing. I haven't seen the Barrier book - is it a Walt bio?

Barrier, who is a tireless researcher, a stickler for detail, and many would say a kind of a jerk, has compiled an online list of Gabler's inaccuracies (as well as his own as he discovers them). While it isn't nearly as egregious as that Charles Schulz hatchet-job, it is a pretty alarming list anyway.

And his review of Gabler, which, while coming from an obviously biased source, is a pretty accurate assessment of Gabler as a reliable historic document:

Just the fact that Gabler used Marc Eliot's "Hollywood's Dark Prince" as a reference speaks volumes.
