We need to go in the way back machine for this one. My first trip to WDW was in 78. I was three soon to be four at the time. My sister was twenty months. I remember both of us being able to ride if we sat on our parents lap. Does anyone else remember this?

I think as a kid myself in 85...I rode space mountain in my dads lap. Because I remember trying to hold the hand rails and him squishing my hands on them. I thought for sure I was the only one who thought this. That was the first roller coaster type ride I had ever been on.

You've got good memories! Yes, Space Mountain had same seat tandem seating, similar to a log flume or the Matterhorn Bobsleds in its early days. Each car held four people, two in the front, two in the back, for a total capactiy of eight people per rocket train (versus the max of 6 there is today). Technically, you wouldn't have been sitting ON their laps, but IN FRONT of them, but, hey, close enough!

The trains were modified to single seats during the late 1980s, I believe.

I wonder if the seating will change to two across if the ride does indeed go down for its extensive rehab towards the end of 2008. From what I've heard, a lot of money is being aimed at this project.

I think that depends on what direction the project takes. If they go with completely gutting the building and building from scratch, whether one large track ride or two rides, they may go with side by side seating. If, on the other hand, all they do is replace the existing track and layout as it is, they may have to stick with the current seating due to space considerations and clearance issues. No matter which direction they choose for the rehab, I'm betting strongly that the ride will eventually have on-board music like some of the other Space Mountains.

Personally, I'd like to see them keep the layouts pretty much intact, just replace the track where needed and improve the special effects and theming.

Really??

I've been told no money has been approved/allocated yet for any Space Mountain work.

I'd love to be wrong here ... but I don't think I am.
