I called this evening to make hotel reservations for the Disney portion of our honeymoon/first trip to Tokyo! (I think I am still feeling a bit giddy, as it's starting to feel official!)
But I digress...
I called to make reservations and found myself in a bit of a pickle. Unfortunately the MiraCosta is sold out our first night, so I booked one night at the Ambassador. Having not stayed at either before, will it be a time-consuming inconvenience to transfer between hotels? I would rather not stay at the Ambassador for the duration of our stay, especially since they didn't not have a non-smoking available for the duration. But I would also rather not lose half a day schlepping luggage between hotels. Your thoughts?

No trouble whatever. The morning you leave the Ambassador, just take your bags to the bell desk and tell them you are transferring to the Mira Costa. They will take your bags and write your information down on a special form just for this situation. Spend your day in the parks, and then when you're ready to check into the Mira Costa, your bags will already be in your room. No trouble at all.

You mean they won't come and fetch them directly from your room!?

Is Tokyo Disney slipping or what!? :p

I have a suggestion (SuperDry knows this stuff more than I though)...after checking out as he suggested, if you don't have any particular plans I'd say go to DisneySea for the day.

Sometime in the morning (anytime you happen to be strolling near Mediterranean Harbor will do), step into the MiraCosta and check in.

Your room won't be ready, of course, but you can "be" checked in and avoid some of the long lines that could build up around check in time or later in the day.

This is assuming they'll give you your key, of course (I don't see why not, as long as you explain that you are going back in the parks and won't return til evening or whatever).

<<< You mean they won't come and fetch them directly from your room!?

I'm sure they would if you called the bellman from your room. But since I travel with wheeled baggage that I can handle myself, that's just an annoyance rather than a help.

I don't think this will work. Check-in time at the Mira Costa is 3pm.

<<< This is assuming they'll give you your key, of course (I don't see why not, as long as you explain that you are going back in the parks and won't return til evening or whatever). >>>

No hotel anywhere is going to do this, as the key will work in the room immediately and they can't risk you going up "just for a peek" and disturbing the current guests. When I did an Ambassador-to-MiraCosta transfer, I stood in line in the afternoon to check in, but they told me my room wasn't ready yet and to come back later for my key. What I recommend is that you tell the bell desk at the Ambassador that you will be checking in late and then go to the Mira Costa in the evening, either after 6pm when the check-in lines have died down or even later when you're done for the day. After 10pm, there will be no line at all.

BTW, the only hotel that I've ever stayed at that would give you your room keys even though the room was not available is the GCH. But the trick is, if the room is not ready, they will not tell you your room number. They give you a phone number to call to check your room status - once it's ready, then they'll tell you the room number and your key will magically work. Pretty clever idea.

I'm quite sure every poster will have great suggestions for you! :)

Enjoy your trip! (what month is this trip planned for again?)

Oh, and do take SuperDry's advice about the switch/check in, and ignore my speculation.

Sounds about right to me (he has checked in MANY times...I'm so jealous!!)...

Especially the advice about telling Ambassador (be sure you do!) that you'll be checking in late at MiraCosta...and then heading to the lobby as late as possible (long lines DO form around check-in time and later in the day as well...I did say that correctly right SD?)...even if SD doesn't reply, I've seen some long lines in mid-afternoon for myself on some days (but what the heck...you're enjoying Tokyo and Disney...so who really cares right? :)

I'm sure you'll have a very enjoyable trip! Where are you staying for the Tokyo segment?

alisserae: my main tip would be to avoid check-in at 3pm. The lines (especially at the MC) are horrific and the check-in process can be very slow indeed. They also won't process you earlier than 3pm. You will almost always get a polite brush-off.

SD: that early check-in facility is available at all DLR hotels. They have had it a long time and it works well. There are actually some WDW resort hotels that also offer the same facility - it just isn't well known.

Thank you for the confirmation, Lee.

My main concern was Alisserae showing up at peak time and waiting for a long time (if these boards could avoid that problem).

Guess I was way off on the early check in idea (sorry!), but you and SuperDry suggesting the late check in with luggage already moved from Ambassador sounds great!

:)

So in any case, sounds like a DisneySea day is in order for "moving day" right? Unless you guys are heading into Tokyo or something....
