We are going in mid-December. Arriving in Tokyo on Friday, and checking into the Ambassador on Sunday, the day before we head into the parks. I thought it would be nice to have an evening to wander the resort & get our bearings. After four days in the parks we'll head back into Tokyo.

Right now it is narrowed down to several hotels: the B akasaka, Park Hotel Tokyo, Mercure Hotel Ginza (probably at the bottom of the list), Chisun Grand Akasaka & Sheraton Miyako (the most tempting option since we are sitting on a mountain of Starwood Points).

I think we might stay the first two nights at the B akasaka and if we like it return after Disney. If we don't like it, then we'll check into the Sheraton Miyako after Disney. I've checked cancellation policies for both hotels and we should be able to cancel either without being penalized. Still, there's plenty of time to change my mind so I am very open to suggestions :-)

^^ I've started to stay at the Conrad Tokyo whenever I'm staying in the area now. Great location, brand-new hotel and really stunning hotel. You can get some great deals with Hilton there too (it is the Hilton premium brand). Plus it is dead easy to get to TDR. Even when I've been working at the resort I've preferred to commute rather than have to stay at an official hotel.

<<< I've started to stay at the Conrad Tokyo whenever I'm staying in the area now. >>>

How is the Conrad as far as stuff to do within walking distance (and not taking the subway)? I need to find a hotel in town for a one-night stay for a group of people, and want to have stuff within walking distance. It looks like the Conrad may be in a redeveloped area with not much else around, but it's hard to tell. It looks like Ginza may be a longish walk away.

^^ Ginza is about ten minutes on foot (although the main junction in Ginza is further). It is in the middle of ad agency and media country (eg. Dentsu and Nippon TV) but I really like the vibe. Lots of restaurants and stuff but you would need to hop on a train at Shinbashi or the Shiodome stations.

But the hotel is fantastic. One of the best restaurants in the city (Gordon Ramsay) and has a modern W-like design but also has nods to local culture. The views of the gardens are pretty cool too. I'm a huge fan of the Conrad brand (the one in Hong Kong is my favourite in that city). Personally I think only the Hyatt comes close but it is getting a little old.

You have an excellent opportunity to stay at both Tokyo Disney Resort hotels. The Ambassador is an excellent hotel and will be closer to Maihama station if you are going into Tokyo, walking distance to Disneyland, and adjacent to IKSPIARI.

The Mira Costa is much more grand but you will easily be able to transfer as Superdry mentioned. If you are self motivated hop on the Monorail with your luggage or take a taxi to the Mira Costa. You will be able to register early and leave your luggage for when you return after check in time. Keep in mind that if you are moving on a Sunday you will not be able to preregister and you will have to wait until check in time.

A taxi? From Ambassador to MiraCosta!? :p

Well, I suppose you could. They're about a 5 minute walk from each other though (takes longer to take the monorail since it goes in the other direction first AND it's a could minutes walk from Ambassador). There's also a shuttle bus to DisneySea from Ambassador that would work fine for free (Taxi'll cost ya 660 yen, most likely, possibly more if there's heavy traffic).

Interesting that you consider Tokyo Disneyland walking distance, to me both parks are pretty much equidistant from Ambassador, in fact I wonder if Ambassador is actually closer to DisneySea??

Why everyone thinks that's a long walk always kills me. lol.

But anyway, Jay, great comments (just had to kid ya about the taxi...I've even read about people who've taxied from Maihama to the Ambassador as well lol).

<<< A taxi? From Ambassador to MiraCosta!? :p >>>

I think it would be dependent on how much luggage you had. Some people travel with entirely too much luggage to handle themselves, and this is especially true if there are members of the party (kids or elderly) that can't handle their own luggage. That would be the case where you'd want to use a taxi. But that's assuming you that you did NOT want to just use the free transfer service, and I can't imagine why you'd not want to do that, as if you transfer the luggage yourself (via taxi or other means), you'd have to check the bags at the bell desk anyway on one side or the other no matter what time of day you did it because of the non-overlapping check-out and check-in times.

Question for Lee or SuperDry (or anyone else who cares to jump in): I'll be at the Tokyo Disney Resort from Sunday Oct.14 through the 20th. Unfortunately my favorite hotel at the right price, the Hilton Tokyo Bay, is charging almost as much (and sometimes more) than the Miracosta during my stay. So, it is the Miracosta at which I'm staying. And without broadband service (nuts, just nuts).
If I arrive on Sunday late afternoon, rather than braving the check-in crowd at the Miracosta, should I consider checking in at the Welcome Center? Or would I be better off just leaving my bags with at the bell desk at the Miracosta and checking in later that night? In Walt Disney World, when they had smoking rooms, you were far more likely to get stuck with one the later you checked in.
So, suggestions?

I've never used the Welcome Center to check in, but I would have absolutely no worries at the Mira Costa about getting a non-smoking room if that's what you've booked, regardless of check-in time.

True. If you requested a non-smoking room when you made the reservations , that is what they'll give you.
