I have been watching DVC resales and i'm curious if there's an advantage to buying one month versus another month? i don't know anything really about how the DVC points work, but was thinking about buying a resale because of the price difference (compared to new sale). we will take a tour on our next trip next month, but would like advice from a DVCer rather than a salesperson. thanks!

Your points will renew every year during that month. In my view, month of ownership doesn't matter. The way I see it I have those points every year and can borrow points from the next year so whether I own in September or August does not matter to me.

This is the month you will pay your dues. So you may want to consider month from a financial planning perspective.

You can consider your month for a trips that you take at the same time every year. Say for example you wanted to take a trip in September and October every year and you have a use month of October 1. You could use your current points for your trip in September and then your points would renew on October 1 without you having to borrow from the next year.

You can book at your home resort 11 months prior to the date of the trip and you may book at another resort 7 months prior to your trip. But this is driven by home resort not use month.

Unlike a traditional timeshare, however, your month is not particularly valuable. Even if your month was December (Holiday), it is more in demand but everyone is on equal footing in terms of booking.

Good luck!

I've heard the "month = when dues are due" before, but its not true for me. My month is August and my dues are "due" on Jan. 15th and late after Feb. 14th.

Yes my month is August but my dues had to be paid by 1/15. I also think it would be an advantage to have a Feb as my use year because 11 month window/versus 7 month would be an advantage for Holiday booking. Is that correct? I also did not get a choice for the month. I purchased in Jan 2001 and they said my use year would be August. Anyway DVC DAd Please post your info again because I still am confused even tho I have been a member for many years.

And another ? about resale pricing. I do not understand why people purchase resales considering the price and the amount of use years left. Does it seem better to just purchase a new contract? Are the prices "firm" that I see listed for resales?

We had the option of October or December. We chose October because there is a rule regarding canceling less than 30 or 60 days before the end of your year(You lose the points). And we regularly travel to DL the last week of November/first week of December. By choosing October these dates are at the beginning of our use year. If we HAVE to cancel, they just go back into our account. AND, this is before we would have to make the decision to bank points for the year.

What month did you purchase to get those choice? That is good advice to remember in case I ever bought more points(GCH/DL hopeful).
All times are Pacific Time (US)
