Man he's preaching to the choir. Anyone here remember how Disney used to inspire and edutain???!!!! How I miss those days. But sadly we know, as I sit alone in Golden Dreams, or Seasons of the Vine, wait to go into a 1/10th full CoP theatre in Florida, or stare at Buzz living where Verne used to teach in Paris, that people do not want to learn and have fun at the same time anymore. It breaks my heart.

Almost every attraction this author (and I) miss had an educational aspect to it. No longer.

Alas, it's not just a Disney thing, davewasbaloo. My fiancee took a road trip from Florida to CA earlier this year; she's as much a history nut as I am, but at just about every historical site or museum she stopped on her trip, there were few if any people there.

People just don't want no edumacation when they go on vacation any more. It's a sad commentary on our country, IMHO...

Very sad. I sometimes wonder if it's because we have too much choice - tv, the web etc., people just ignore things they do not know.

<People just don't want no edumacation when they go on vacation any more.>

I'm not sure it's fair to blame 'people.'

I'm not sure people 'wanted' and eductational vacation back in the 50s and 60s. Disney developed those types of attractions anyway, since it provided a nice balance of attractions at the park.

Today, it's become mostly rides with Disney characters as the theme.

I miss CircleVision 360, Diamond Horseshoe Revue, The PeopleMover....those fun, smaller-level attractions that would allow you to rest your feet, cool off, and then head back out into the park.

To me, that's what's missing. Back when I was growing up 'Disney' meant more than just cartoon characters, and Disneyland reflected that.

Amen Jim, in fact, to me the characters were/are an annoying distraction.

^^^Me too.

I was 7 years old when I first visited Disneyland, and while I thought the characters were cute, it wasn't the reason I was there.

I liked Disneyland far more than the animated features.

Sounds like a kindred spirit. To me, I loved to pretend I was in deepest darkest Africa, exploring the frontier as a pioneer, racing down the icy slopes of the Alpine, exploring outer space and inner space. Dancing to live music. Enjoying an old fashioned barbershop quartet, or a wood carver in Frontierland.

Seeing falls of Big and Little Thunder at Cascade peak. MArverlling at the performances of hula dancers to cancan dancers, and looking in wonderment at a travelling salesman who could spit out so many teeth and yet smile at the end of a performance.

To me Disneyland was bringing these themes to life. And therein was the magic. Cartoon characters, references to animated features, and overt film references are not magical or inspiring. They are dull pieces of marketing synergy, not art.

What hurts is there are no real alternatives. Las Vegas was trying to out Disney Disney, but now that seems dead too. And Disney is still head and shoulders above their competitors, but that's not hard.
