<<everything you see on the DisneySea entrance side (meaning, the AquaSphere, The MiraCosta, the entranceway, monorail station, entrance village, the tree-lined driveway, the fountains) cost MORE then the total cost of entire Disneyland Resort expansion in 2001.>>

The problem with these comparisons is that they don't take into account the cost of capital in each of these situations. Interest rates in Japan during the construction of DisneySea were essentially 0%. In the U.S., corporate lending rates were in the range of 6-7% during the construction phase of DCA. When you factor in the cost of capital for each project, instead of just raw construction budgets, the cost of the DLR expansion starts to get a bit closer to the TDR expansion.

^^Good point!!

Its still staggering to know that they spent 4 BILLION for TDS expansion. That seems really insane to me although what is great about it you can see where every yen went for it :).

TL '98 expansion cost around $100 million and besides a nice coat of gold paint, Rocket Rods and some nice trees, I couldn't figure where the the other $60 million went ;).

All those extra tyres for the Rocket Rods.

And then even THAT stopped.

Pretty sad, huh?

Wrong.

Disney, like all corporations, takes advantage of the YEN CARRY TRADE...

If you don't know what it is, look it up.

Trust me, they didn't pay no stinkin interest on their loans...

As the late, great Leona Helmsley (and her recently filthy rich dog too) liked to say..."taxes are for the little people".

Then they should stop reporting interest expenses in their annual reports along with the rates they are paying on outstanding corporate debt. If these expenses are falsified and don't exist, someone should go to jail for signing off on the corporate accounting documents.

Oh good grief... you think Walt was all 'above the board' with Disneyland? He had to be up over his head if he morgaged his HOUSE to pay for stuff (while also owning a major film studio). Right or wrong, good or bad... I think all who have been to Tokyo DisneySea and MiraCosta would agree that it's a labor of love, and a marvel of design. The fact that a project of it's scale got built.. well... anywhere... is just a wonderful thing. Just think about how many billions (and billions and billions) of dollars are wasted by countries on war, drug wars, and prisons, which could go to schools, education, and our cities...

I don't really care how it was accomplished, but it was. That's admirable. I agree with what someone else said, that we will NEVER see a theme park built like TDS again. At least in our lifetime. Sure, 50 years from now inflation will make it seem like it... but I highly doubt that size of (admittedly insane) funding will ever be used again for a theme park. It's sad really, because it's so rare to see someone take huge chances anymore... no one has any massive vision. You could argue, Dubai probably does, as does China, but those places (while they will certainly continue with producing amazing architecture) are overshadowed by the spirit of inner-competition, rather then an overall vision. Shiodome in Tokyo was a great example of how the city obviously spent time working with must've been several companies to come up with a one-of-a-kind 'city plan' to the area. Hence all the glass skyscrapers. Japan is far from perfect, but I'm not alone in feeling like we should've built the Frank Lloyd Wright never-built ‘final design', "The Mile High" building in the spot of the Twin Towers. Hell, we're the country that put a man on the moon.... (didn't we?). As much as I hate blind patriotism, I also hate lazy apathy. People need to dream more.

Sometimes in order to move forward, the 'bad cop' stuff needs to be thrown out. Risks and change and new frontiers.... hmmmmm... sounds a little like Tomorrowland, huh?

I'm so happy TDS was built like it was.... and more importantly... maintained like the jewel it is. It's one of a kind, and very very special. It's not fair to compare it to the other parks, because it's funding was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity (or illegal advantage if you want to look at everything negatively), in a totally different, hugely-gift-store-profitable marketplace. I'm just happy that, with some luck, it will be around to show my family for years to come... and inspire them to dream those 'impossible' dreams.

Well said, Kayoss. I agree with everything you said. We should all be happy Tokyo DisneySea & the Hotel MiraCosta even got built, even if it wasn't here in the states like it was supposed to. In a way, I'm kind of glad it got built in Japan. You wouldn't see the same level of service or maintenance here, that's for sure. It has been said many times before, but I'll say it again; Tokyo DisneySea & the Hotel MiraCosta are both a masterpiece of Imagineering and art!

>>Just to clarify, there is no train station at the entrance to TDL, but a rather odd looking facade:

I find it funny and somewhat ignorant to refer to TDL's main entrance as odd looking, when the same facade is found at at WDW's Main Street, housing Tony's Restaurant and the former Walt Disney Story exit lobby. Did you think this facade is unique to TDL? Well.. newsflash! NO, it is not. It's lifted from the MK's Main Street. like most everything else was when TDL was designed.

>>Personally, I wouldn't like to be in a hotel room where I had no window to the outside world (even if the outside looked kinda ugly lol)...<<

May I suggest Mr X that you never ever visit the Castle suite at the MK.
