"I hate to pick on you, jon, but why do I strongly hear Eyore's voice when I read the above?"

It does sound like it!

But, is it not true?

"Under Eisner's direction the idea of producing top quality themed attractions was replaced with a commitment to product based on marketing calculations (Pressler). "

I guess they pick the manager of the week to pick on, because they just devoted a long screed on how it was Matt Mendehall who did that.

I just noticed that their "disney professionals" consist of some guy who worked in the laundry at disneyland. So, ok, not a great site.

"Jon, the place may have been fine to you ... hell, I enjoyed it from Day 1 ... but those are opinions"

It was fine for what it was supposed to be. It wasn't supposed to be WDW when it opened. It was a platform from which to grow. It just didn't really ever grow well. They have spent a lot of time and effort making he place a bit of a mess now.

The likelyhood was that without DCA Disneyland would have been gone eventually. That's the reality. The "heroin monkey" (as he stupidly put it) kept the place in business.

"I think any rational thinker would come to the conclusion by 2007"

The original plans and ideas actually were well founded. But six years later, it is in need of fixing up. I've said this.

"I'll keep on stating that DCA saved DL in Anaheim "

This is exactly right, and people just don't understand why this is.

"I guess they pick the manager of the week to pick on, because they just devoted a long screed on how it was Matt Mendehall who did that."

Based on your much publicized dislike of the character invasion of themed areas, I'd have thought this line,

"This great marketing inquisition(led by Mendenhall), more than anything else, has led to all those out-of-character characters invading Frontierland, Adventureland and Tomorrowland as well as such awkward attractions as Stitch's Great Escape, Monster's Inc. Laugh Floor and DCA's Monsters Inc.: Mike and Sully to the Rescue, the latter title penned directly by Mendenhall himself."

would have not ingratiated Mr. Mendenhall to you?

If he did those things, then it's good he is gone. But he did not do them alone. One manager in a department does not decree that all things must go through him without it being discussed and approved at a higher level.

But my comment was about how they claim different people were responsible for similar things depending on who they were deciding to target that day.

That says to me they aren't really privy to what's going on.

"They had no plans to build out either. They actually planned on DCA being so successful that they wouldn't begin construction on Phase II, which would have been ToT and the Armageddon effects show from DSP, until the 2005-06 timeframe."

That would be plans to build out.

I think they swung the pendulum to far in the financial direction on this. To correct that thing thing to have done would be to accelerate the build out of the place in a logical and coherent manner. Instead, they opted to throw whatever they could into it whereever they could, much like they are doing with their other parks, too.

So, now, six years after this "effort" we get something that had a good promise, was never backed up with execution and now needs some extra work done in a clear and cogent manner.

"I knew the people ... knew how out of touch the exec team at TDA was"

Out of touch management happens. I've worked at places where you just have to shake your head at how ridiculous it all seems.

"to say they always planned to start small and grow is really simplfying things to a microscopic level."

But I do think that was the basic idea, just not carried out very well. Much like everything was not carried out very well in the last few years.

"Thanks to anyone who read this very incoherent post! Any thoughts?"

Are you saying Castmember Matt didn't make it all better for you? I'm shocked!
