It's a new drama series on TNT that started this summer.

Takes place in 1960, and centers around Don Draper, a hot shot advertising executive.

It's a real snapshot of 'the good old days' -- the men are all chauvanist pigs, the women all subservient, everyone smokes and drinks, the men all cheat on their wives, and generally, people are miserable.

The producers have done an excellent job of creating the 'look' of the show -- all the early 60s hairstyles and fashions are done beautifully. The acting is top-notch, and storylines compelling.

It is, on the whole, a bit depressing to think that this is what life was like back then.

Anyone else watching?

Yes, I mentioned this in another thread (on "whiter shade of pale," I think.

It's actually on AMC, Thursdays at 10; I know they rerun it but I'm not sure when.

I'm into this show. They do capture the period perfectly, and as I said on the other thread, they show what the 60's rebelled AGAINST, and why that rebellion had to happen. A lot of people think of this as the good old days, but it would be depressing indeed if that rebellion hadn't happened.

Yes, I'm watching it with my mom. She lived that era and she gives a blistering running commentary which is hilarious.

At the end she constantly tells me things like "so quit making fun of my Berkeley days, you could be living like this", "you wouldn't have the job you have today if we didn't stand up to this garbage back in ...."

Ok, ok mom! ;>

I think we needed to start watching it from the beginning. Our 25 year olds are loving it so DH and I checked it out last week. We found it to be depressing. In 1960 I would have been in K and DH in 2nd grade. That's scary in itself to think of our lives at retro for our kids, LOL!

We'll give it another shot but I dunno.

I've caught bits and pieces of it. I've liked what I've seen. If I have time I'll catch a marathon or else rent the dvd.

My cable system offers this show "on demand" for a buck or two, so if yours does too, if you wanted you could catch back episodes that way.

I've got Direct TV so it doesn't allow that.

Thanks for clarifying Dabob2 -- AMC is of course, correct.

Far from being a sweet, nostalgic look back in time [say, what 'The Waltons' or 'Happy Days' were when they were on TV in the 70s], 'Mad Men' is scathing, brutal, and incredibly depressing.

Every character in 'Mad Men' is a mess. We find that Don Draper's wife is probably the most messed up of all of them. Living the Donna Reed, mom-in-an-apron type of life, but ready to burst out screaming on the inside.

I've really been enjoying the show, although I feel like I should take up smoking just to keep up . . .

I managed to see the entire season thanks to last Sunday's marathon. It may indeed be scathingly true to the period, with a lot of the characters "a mess" as suggested above - but WHAT A FABULOUS SHOW!. Doesn't depress me - rather,I am fascinated by it. I think it is a fabulous show - I love the writing, the characters, the acting, the sets, the costumes!! The scene where he pitched their ad campaign idea to the Eastman-Kodak boys in the final episode of the first season had me riveted - in fact, I watched it four times. I, for one, cannot WAIT to see the season two premiere this Sunday night.
