>>Actually, from what I understand, Speeder Bikes were actually the first concept for what was going to replace the People Mover. But, a combination of technological issues and Disneyland's operational requirements (increased guest capacity) resulted in the bikes morphing into the Rocket Rods. I doubt they could ever get back to a Speeder Bike type ride and get it to function successfully.

That's right 2001DLfan!!
I foundly remember the late Bruce & David telling me those ideas back in 1994/95 when TL98 was being laid out on paper.

I remember the desire to have both rides the Peoplemover and Speeder Bikes riding side by side. But the logistics of that idea made it impossible.

Fascinating history here .......

*Peoplemover would have been a bit rerouted in the 1984 planned Tomorrowland renovation that does not get discussed much.
*Peoplemover yet another and different change in the TL:2055 plan
*Peoplemover and Speeder Bike side-by-side idea for TL:98
*Peoplemover dumped in favor of the 90s rush on XXXXtreme thrills
*Peoplemover brought back into discussion since Rocket Rods fizzled in Sept 2000.
*Some sort of Peoplemover 2.0 finally in the works.

Some concepts never die! :)

"But at what cost to SPECIFIC themed lands where it's completely out of place?"

This is one of the worst things happening right now.

Saddly the first park to get hit by this was MK then it slowly creeped into Disneyland.

The one land getting hit hard by misplacement is tomorrowland specifically in the MK.

Hong Kong Disneyland's Tomorrowland does not seem to be fairing so well either:

This all seems pretty simple to me, whether you like it or not:

DLR adds non-character/movie based rides and attractions: TL98, DCA, and the general reception is negative.

So they add Buzz, Nemo, Monsters, Pirates movie tie-ins...and the general reception is positive.

Plus as bean pointed out, the movie/toon based rides capitalize on the synergy of more DVD sales, merchandies, etc...

Which generates more money to put back into the parks for future expansion...

If I'm Disney, and I'm seeing this pattern, I'm adding more cartoon and movie based rides.

"Saddly the first park to get hit by this was MK then it slowly creeped into Disneyland."

It seems to me that Disney has decided that the Magic Kingdom, and all Disneyland-style parks, now has one over-arching theme of FANTASY. This seems to have come from Florida after they built EPCOT, and decided that they no longer needed Tomorrowland to be rooted in reality since they had Future World only a short monorail ride away. At the time, this sort of made sense for the Florida property, and it allowed them to do things like Alien Encounter and Timekeeper in a "Future that Never Was" motiff.

Unfortunately, this trend continued and spread - not only to other lands at the MK, but to other Disneyland parks. Now, they seem to want to fill all the lands with fantasy elements, and only do reality-based attractions in other parks. And even there, they still add characters and fantasy - see Epcot's current Future World as an example.

While I can't deny that these attractions seem to be popular, I can't help but think this will eventually come back to bite them in the *ss. The pendulum has swung to far towards fantasy - hopefully they can correct this soon! Disney used to actually EDUCATE and INSPIRE while entertaining - and I for one really miss this aspect of the theme parks.

Yeah! And at the expense of a delicate "theming" balance the "MK" parks USE TO have!

See: WDW Tomorrowland fiasco: Stitch, Monsters Inc Comedy Club

So ... if they want to line the pocket books at the detriment of the longterm integrity of their MK parks ... go for it!
