Actually, here's a print of the area in question:

As you can see, between the railroad, monorail, Autopia, and Grand Canyon entrance, there's not much space available.

Behind the carousel of progress is a ton of space. The train could be incorporated into whatever building they want to use.

Let me see if I can find a satellite image if that makes it any clearer...

I mean, that drawing makes it look like there is a ton of space.

Anyway, that shows there to be quite a lot of empty space.

The photo does seem to show a lot of empty space, but stripped of vegetation, it's a different picture. (Look at the blueprint to see what I mean.)

The greenery immediately behind Innoventions is concealing the tunnel entrance to the Grand Canyon. On the other side of that is part of the East Side Chiller Plant.

If the will was there to rebuild the entire area, there is certainly a bit of wiggle room. I just doubt that the benefit to be derived would begin to compare to the effort and expense.

The tunnel is clearly shown on the print. There have been further additions to this area since the print was made in 1967. You can see them on the satellite photo.

They really need to keep the service road back there, if for no other reason than to access the back of Main Street and Tomorrowland during the day. I would assume that there are vehicles regularly traveling that road. If it were to be eliminated, this would mean that those vehicles would have to exit backstage on Ball Rd, turn onto Harbor, and re-enter down by the shuttle drop off area. While this wouldn't nessecarily be the end of the world, it would be a major pain in the butt, as they would now have to deal with traffic and government regulations on the vehicles. It would also seperate DL and DCA backstage areas (yes, they're connected by a tunnel under the shuttle area) which would mean that DCA would need to have a lot more infrastructure built.

They also use the road when marching bands come to the park, as they only do a one-way parade. When I was there in December last year, we warmed up by the Circle D, and marched all the way around the park on that road, and then came in by Town Square, played a show, and then marched up the parade route. If they were to eliminate that road, they would need to find a place to park the busses for the bands backstage behind Main Street, so they can change back there as well, since it would be essentially impossible for them to walk down the sidewalk of Harbor. While that road may not seem like a lot, it has many purposes. If they build something there, they would need to take that into consideration, and incorporate the road (either in a tunnel or on top of the new structures) into the plan.

That's what I was saying, that service road would be the real problem, and it would have to be taken into account with a tunnel or something.

The thing is, the building does not have to sit right on the ground there, it can be raised up a bit, and built over and around whatever they want to save.
