Back to Mulholland Madness. Everybody here knows how I feel about it, but I wouldn't hate this. What is they put it in a show building that looks kinda like the Hotel del. And theme it to a fun house/ haunted house. You could even have the drop in the front be outside where you bust through a door down the drop and then back up and into the building. Of course there would have to be a lot of cool, make you jump special fx. Smoke screens like Davy Jones. I could live with it if they really did it to the nines.

You know, I've worked for leaders who were absolute omni-present in the workplace, showing their face everywhere, shaking everyone's hand, and being rah-rah cheerleaders every second.

I've also worked for leaders who were total introverts, never ventured far from their office, and were very matter of fact in everything they said or did.

I've seen successful leaders in both cases and also miserable failures. I think it is naive for people to try and judge someone based on a single leadership characteristic. Everyone wants the DL President to be Walt Disney reincarnate riding the fire truck down Main Street, but the reality is that there is far more turmoil and fires to put out backstage to keep the park running smoothly than what is happening on stage. How a leader addresses those issues should be his or her own business and not subject to the peanut gallery critiques of online gossipers who probably can't even manage their own savings account.

It's interesting that we never see Ed Grier because it is so different from the previous Presidents. I even remember seeing Paul Pressler around the park routinely.

One time on a Mark Twain shift the phone range in the Ice House (the CM shack on the dock). It was Paul Pressler on a speakerphone, and he introduced himself. I rembember being really impressed he was calling at first. It was winter and it was after sundown and the Mark still had a few hours left of operation. He asked me "Hey, are you guys running the boat still, even though its dark out?" And I said yes. And then he asked me "Is the Indian Village and stuff lit up enough to make that even worthwhile? Can people see anything?" And I told him we did have show lighting on the river, but that some of it was burned out and so we also shined our spotlight on the important stuff like the scratching bear. He thought that was pretty funny for some reason, maybe because this kid on the other end of the line was so serious about such a silly thing like shining a light on a dorky scratching bear gag. He said that was good to know, and he would see what he could do about getting the lights fixed. I don't remember if the lighting issues got fixed, and I have no idea what prompted this random call from him about such a trivial thing. And now I have no idea what this has to do with anything we are talking about here 10 years later, but I guess it proves that even Paul Pressler was at least casually interested in the daily operation of the property he was in charge of. Yeah, that must have been my point. ;-)

We saw Paul in the Park. We saw Cynthia in the Park. We saw Matt in the Park A HECK OF A LOT. We never see Ed. Just the facts there.

Like I said earlier, I don't really care if I don't see Ed around much at all. But you would think that he would get out there every so often, and especially show up to major openings like Pirate's Lair Opening Day, Haunted Mansion Holiday Opening Day, etc., etc. I do wonder why he doesn't show up to stuff like that, at the very least.

It's just a big change to never see the Prez once in awhile, that's why CM's mention it I think. It's a change.

<<If not Ratatouille, what do you all think they might have in mind for that spot between the proposed beer garden and the new Grand Californian DVC units?>>

I think you've discovered the real reason why the coaster was nixed. From Al's update:

"The new viewing platform being built atop the DVC expansion wing of the Grand Californian wasn't added so folks can see the fireworks, it was specifically added so hotel and DVC guests can watch the World of Color show in the lagoon just to the south. Certainly the Disneyland fireworks will be visible from that rooftop deck, but it was a presentation on World of Color that wowed the DVC planners enough to add a viewing platform atop the new hotel wing."

Anyone familiar with the show building for Crush's coaster at DSP? It's friggin' huge! The same ride system was to be used for DCA's Ratatouille coaster where MM is currently located.

Did some brainiac in Glendale FINALLY get a clue that the new DVC wing at GCH would be totally blocked by the coaster's show building? And that even the Sun Wheel would most likely be hidden, even from the roof platform?

well, the Soarin building is also huge and is quite evident by how it looms over Epcot yet at DCA the building is much smaller.

Buildings can be sunk into the ground here in Anaheim much easier than Florida and there was no real reason to do it in Paris.

As for Ratatouille, I am not going to say whether or not the idea has been thrown out. I and others had stated before that there was more than one idea being considered for that area of the park. Neither Rataouille or any of these other ideas had been decided on. The area is still being developed and things are changing.

It all depends on how things look visually as they are being developed.

As for some of those other projects, they have not been cancelled. The timing for construction is just being worked out. There will be lots of construction going on in some areas of the park and other areas could wait and be next in line.

Thank you Bean. I was extremly disheartened to hear that they weren't going to add anything to the Grizzly peak area but at least there still on the table.

I hope the Little Mermaid ride by Tony Baxter gets greenlit though!

I'm probably in agreement with many of you that I raise an eyebrow of skepticism whenever I read Al Lutz columns, but overall, they are great fun and get the imagination going.

In this day where it takes 10+ years for an empty building to finally get a new attraction, at the very least Al keeps people excited and interested in the promise of the future for the parks.

Whether or not the Ratatouille coaster happens or not, it has at the very least been an entertaining idea, and at least gives us all something to talk about while DCA continues to sit there relatively unchanged.
