<<Discoveryland's take of a future that never existed worked wonderfully...until they tore that theme apart. >>

Why - just because Buzz has replaced Visionarium?? Three atttractions have been replaced/redone in Discoveryland but architecturally the land is still almost exactly the same - it is still the most architecturally robust of the TLs by far. And that should be the driving force behind any vision of the future - just because Star Tours is "futuristic" just mean it is any more valid in TL than Buzz.

And Port Discovery is a clear knock-off of Tim Delaney's original work in Paris. Even down to the smallest detail.

Ugh - it is too late. I meant to say DOESN'T mean it is any more valid.

Yes, but Discoveryland was themed to the age of discovery and that was reflected in all the attractions. With the loss of the "From the Earth to the Moon" storyline in Space Mountain to a more generic space travel, the attraction lost quite a bit of charm that made it so delightful in the first place. Le Visionarium, although not a particularly exciting attraction, perfectly definied the central theme of the land. I won't deny that Buzz is a great attraction, but it's modern take of a futuristic vision didn't quite blend in as well in Discoveryland as it did in Tomorrowland.

I have no problems with that. I love Discoveryland and kind of wish the Tomorrowlands would change their look to something similar. Both Discoveryland and Port Discovery are a stunning piece of work.

<<To be fair most (inside OLC and Disney) felt that that particular pad was actually a transition space from World Bazaar and Tomorrowland. The color scheme and architectural motifs of the former Meet the World building were reflections of World Bazaar rather than Tomorrowland. TL doesn't really commence until Star Tours (although they are right next door to each other>>

Interesting I've never looked at it like that but it kind of follows on from the Haunted Mansion which is an transition space between Fantasyland and Westernland. Even through Fantasyland is considered its home land.

"Well there is nothing I can say that will change your opinion."

Not so fast there......90 or so fully realized AA's brings hope back to the table. If the sets and AA's are done masterfully that would mitigate/neutralize my inherent disdain for attraction interaction and "strict story-lines" vs "loose".

I can't have my cake and eat it too.

Well, actually I can...... I'll just monorail over to "the Sea" and tap the caldera for some Journey to the Center Of the Earth and 20K.

I'll say this much, as Lee has been one of the harshest critics of Tokyo Disney Resort we have on board, coupled with the fact that he probably knows more about this project than anyone onboard the SS laughingplace...well, if HE'S excited *I'M* excited! :)

As far as Monsters being "not really in Tomorrowland" though, I don't really buy that. I realize the surroundings sort of bleed off from WorldBazaar and all but I don't really see that (depending on where you're standing, anyway).

What I REALLY wish is that they would go with the "whole new land" idea and create a "Hollywoodland" or whatever comprising Buzz, Monsters, Honey (or better Philharmagic), Star Tours and the theater...NONE of which says "Tomorrowland" to me...and leave the other half as Tomorrowland (from Space Mountain on down). Maybe do a little imagineering magic to separate the space between Space Mountain and the bridge (hard to explain, but I can see it in my head), retheme the restaurants appropriately to sort of connect the two bridge attractions to that back half of Tomorrowland, and then we'd not only have a whole new land (which attractions-wise is ALREADY THERE), AND keep the purist version of Tomorrowland alive with perhaps a new attraction or two more appropriate to the original concept.

THAT, I'd love to see.

:-)

I;m not sure I would accept the "harshest critic" label - I'm just not a salivating fanboy over TDS - I think the park is hugely flawed (especially the attraction line-up which is vastly overpraised IMHO). I'm not a huge fan of TDL either to be fair - my main criticism is the lack of proper bleed between the land but when virtually the entire park is one continuous strip of concrete it is difficult to achieve that. However there is no denying that Hunny Hunt is worth park admission on its own (and this coming from someone who despised Disney's take on the Milne character).

Monsters Inc. will be a hugely addictive and repeatable experience. I'm probably a little bias but it is exactly what TDL needs - a park that will get the regulars back over and over again. Hunny Hunt had a little of that repeatability factor with the three-pot despatch system (for those that don't know hunny pots are sent from unload/load in sets of three and each has its own course in the attraction) but Monsters will take it to a whole new level and that is why OLC is so excited about it.

Mark by words - Rocky will be a huge success - he is the key to the future popularity of this attraction.

So why do the two US parks have such a different type of ride for a Monsters dark ride, when all three are under development at the same time?

Sorry SD - I don't think I understand you. All three? Do you mean DCA's already opened attraction? If it gets greenlighted the DHS attraction for Monsters is completely different - it isn't a dark ride. The TDL attraction was developed in complete isolation (as is typical for TDR projects).

That's because I'm totally confused in the head. I was getting the Toy Story attractions mixed up with the new Monsters attraction at TDL.

Now that I see the errors in my ways, let me restate the question: it seems that the new TDL Monsters attraction and the new Toy Story attractions in the US are dark rides based on new interactive technology, but that they're different. It seems a bit odd that there would be two independent new dark ride interactive ride systems being built at the same time, what with all the unknowns involved.
All times are Pacific Time (US)
