Just a couple of additional items...

As far as I know, they do not know who carved the figures. They were sent anonymously to the studio. Since they are all the same height, it has been speculated that the carver based them on a set of figural soaps.

After they arrived, Walt called in John Hench and asked him to find an appropriate spot near the castle to display them. Hench thought this was an awful idea. He thought that placing marble statues of Snow White and the Dwarfs would look like Disneyland's own Forest Lawn, where they were all buried. (John Hench told this story himself in my presence in 1990.)

The grotto setting was arrived at for two reasons. First, it would look completely unlike a memorial, and second, it made the use of forced perspective easier. Since Snow White is supposed to be taller, she is placed at the top, further away, and is accompanied by an underscaled deer. The Dwarfs, on the other hand, are placed on lower levels and accompanied by an over scaled bunny and squirrel. (All the animals were created by Disney.)

A side note: The charming soundtrack that plays at regular intervals was recorded by Adriana Casselotti, the original voice of Snow White. But she recorded it some 20 years after playing the role. If you listen closely, you can hear a more mature quality in the voice.

Alex loves it when she tosses in a penny at the right time when Snow White starts to sing.

I have a webpage with old and new pics of this area:

Interesting to note some of the changes along the years; Dopey used to have a "stick" in his hand.

A little more information on this that I got on the Walk in Walts Footsteps tour which I took yesterday. Our tour guide, David, told us that the originals were lost for a number of years after being packed away. They were found when a forklift operater was moving some crates around and dropped one. Hearing something break, he opened the crate and discovered the missing statues, with one of Snow Whites arms broken. This has now been repaired and the original statues now on display in a Disney office somewhere ( I forget where). Anyway, I cant vouch for the accuracy of this story, but it did come from a tour guide just yesterday.

interesting, they get packaged to save them from damaged then someone does not keep proper archive information and they get damaged.
