ORDDU: Yes, it's like the Jim Hill reaction to Ratatouille. He saw nothing but negatives until the final results came in and only then did he admit he'd been looking at the entire matter all wrong. Hopefully those who can't accept that ENCHANTED was a hit will come around, too.

It may be a hit financially, but as a movie, for me itrates a meh. Ok to watch, don't know if i'll ever bother again. But what do I know as I liked Cars, Tron, Atlantis, Treasure Planet and brother bear more than any of the traditional Disney movies.

I don't see how it is a hit financially. The Chipmunks movie blew it out of the water during the holiday season in terms of box office performance.

ORDDU: My sisters and I had heard the Chipmunk movie bombed. But, then, we also haven't been keeping close track of it lately.

The chipmunks are currently on $209 million domestically.

Dave, I didn't know you were a big fan of Brother Bear too! While I don't really consider it Disney's greatest masterpiece, it's one of the most entertaining films they've done, and it even has a good message to it. I don't think I've ever watched the whole thing without getting a little misty-eyed, and I've seen it enough times to know what's coming. It's just a very well done movie. Enchanted, on the other hand starts out great, keeps going great, and then they throw in the dragon and everything gets a little muddy.

>>I don't see how it is a hit financially. The Chipmunks movie blew it out of the water...<<
It is a hit financially because it has made hundreds of millions of dollars. I suppose I could make the absurd claim that Alvin and the Chipmunks was a financial flop because Pirates of the Caribbean made a billion dollars worldwide. But it would be absurd, because it would not take away the fact that Alvin still made a lot of money.

As far as whether one "likes" Enchanted or not, that is simply a matter of taste. Saying, "I didn't like it, therefore it is a bad film" is another thing entirely.

The nation's film critics have given Enchanted fine marks. The film site rottentomatoes.com gives it a rating of 93% (that is, 93% of all critical reviews were positive). Incidently, Alvin and the Chipmunks stands at a 24% rating among all critics.

Based on any dispassionate criteria, Enchanted is and has been a successfull film.

<< It is a hit financially because it has made hundreds of millions of dollars. >>

That only qualifies it as a hit if the amount of money it brought in exceeded by a large margin that amount it cost to produce the film.

Divide box office receipts by two, that is the rule of thumb for determining the studio's take. How much did Enchanted cost to make, distribute, advertise? Based on average costs for these sorts of films, I don't see Enchanted making much money until they see the some revenue from DVD and video releases. There's certainly not going to be any merchandising tie-ins to add to the films financial success.

I would consider Enchanted an artistic success, a fine film, a fun film, but from the financial perspective it is only mediocre at best.

ORWEN: No merchandise tie-ins for ENCHANTED? You must not be a collector of ENCHANTED merchandise or you'd know, by now, that a good bit of it is already sold out and can't be found any more. There's only a limited time for the Disney company to use Amy Adams' likeness for the dolls they've made and those are already hard to find because so many stores are sold out of them already.

^^
Disney isn't in the business of selling out popular merchandise and then just ending the product. If there were demand for the product, they would make more. The movie wasn't a big hit, thus the lack of merchandise on the shelves. If collectors bought what little there was to sell, that's great but not all that lucrative in the big scheme of things.
