You know what i just realized? Giselle is not a princess. She came so close but actually isn't!

But, she IS a princess in the Disney marketing empire! Lots of Giselle 'princess' items to be found in the Disney Stores now...

Disney's marketing of Giselle as a princess actually has irritated me ever since I saw the film...

ORWEN: Of course, when you stop to think about it, Cinderella and Belle weren't really princesses, either. I mean, yes, they eventually married Royalty. But on their own, they were just common peasant girls who knew how to ACT like princesses. It's the same way with Giselle--except she never quite married into royalty.

ORGOCH: Heck! that Giz-smell gal had it best of all! She married some goomer who makes more money than any prince there ever was! A dang LAWYER!!

Cindy & Belle became princesses by marriage. But Tink is often listed with the princesses. Mulan, sometimes. And once upon a time there was a princess shirt with Esmeralda on it.

So Disney sometimes stretches a point for marketing.

Where's the Princess Nancy merchandise?

Technically, it isn't entirely clear that Belle ever became a princess either. Unlike many of the fairy tale movies, "Beauty and the Beast" didn't end with a wedding scene.

It is always possible that she decided that the prince was more interesting as a beast and dumped him... :)

ORWEN: Well, that's not what she told us! She said she went ahead and got married to the Prince after he went and shed his fur coat.

ORDDU: I can attest to that. Furthermore, I was one of the many guests who attended their wedding.

ORGOCH: In a bat's butt!! I don't remember seein' no invite comin' in the mail!!

ORWEN: Me either.

ORDDU: Well, dears, I'm sorry but that's what happens when one of you is too busy hunting frogs while the other one is out hunting for Krispy Kremes. I would have taken you both along but the two of you were nowhere to be found. On a more positive note, though, I was lucky enough to sit next to Gaston at the wedding!!!

Umm...didn't he smell bad? Being dead and all. But then I bet you find that charming, don't you, Orddu? ;)

ORDDU: Well, it all depends, dear. There's bad and then there's' BAD. But, actually, Gaston never really died after falling off the roof of the Beast's castle and on down into that deep gully far below. He's a REAL man, you see. So it would take a lot more than THAT to kill him. No, he merely picked himself up, dusted himself off and hurried over to my place where he knew he'd be well taken care of. Naturally he had some cuts and bruises for me to attend. But I've always loved to play doctor, in case you didn't already know...

Back on topic, since I FINALLY saw the durn thing today . . .

Scene with the ogre, where Prince Edward picks up Nathaniel and twirls him around. Identical to Prince Philip picking up his fat dad in Sleeping Beauty. But with an ogre.

The Working Song thing had a lot of animal action that was lifted from similar Disney scenes. Like the toilet-scrubbing scene in Oliver and Company. (KIDDING!) One in particular I noticed - the three singing roaches on Giselle's finger. Just like the singing bees on Uncle Remus's finger in Zip-a-Dee-Doo-Dah.

I think you guys got all the other ones I caught, but if I remember something else, I'll be back.

IMHO, the animation looked more Don Bluth or early DreamWorks (especially Sinbad) than Disney. Perhaps it was because they had to make it look like the live actors. But I enjoyed it immensely anyway, and they certainly nailed the Arielface look. The rest of the movie was pretty good too, if a bit too by-the-numbers for my taste. Not many surprises in it. The musical numbers were great fun, and Amy Adams was awesome.

Note to self - never ever EVER wait this long to see a movie. It was at a $2 theater. The print was trashed, the sound was terrible, and the projector refused to stay in focus. Ya gets what ya pays for. When the DVD comes out, I'll actually get to SEE it.
