It's time for me to confess: I don't really care for Angela Lansbury as Mrs. Lovett. I thought HBC was a drastic improvement, and I'm not even a huge HBC fan. I thought she did very well with this material though.

Alright! i have fianlly seen sweeeney todd! I took my dad as part of his xmas present and we both loved it!!! the set, costumes and makeup design were wonderful! I loved the chemistry between depp and helena bohem carter. they make the perfect pair on screen! HBC was great as miss lovetts!!! i think i might like her version a bit more than patty lapones and angela lansbury. The music was awesome and everyone sounded amazing! it was great to see alan rickman as the mean judge and he did a great job with that role. but i have to say i enjoyed timothy spalls character a bit more than alan rickmans. you just love to hate this guy! but he is so funny at the same time! but i am still in awe with this movie. tim burton really has out done himself with this film! and lucky for me i knew the manager of the theatre i went to and he knows how much of a fan i am of the story , burton and depp and he gave me one of the sweeney todd movie posters that normally is displayed outside! i sm do hsppy!!!

I "sm" glad that you're "do hsppy". :P

What poster is it? The one with that has Sweeney's face on a red background? That's cool. I'd really like to have the one where he's walking down the tunnel, or sitting in the barber's chair.

Just saw 'Sweeney' last night.

I'm very familiar with the original musical -- saw it in 1982 with Len Cariou and Angela Lansbury in LA, and have listened to the score many, many times over the years. One of my favorites.

Overall, I thought the movie was terrific. The look of it. The feel. Great, dark, creepy sets. The music score was lush, and beautiful -- it sounded fantastic.

And blood. Lots of blood. Yikes.

Loved Johnny Depp. He's really on a roll. And his singing was good.

I liked Helena Bonham Carter too as Mrs. Lovett - she looks great, and she's a terrific actor -- the relationship between her and Todd finally made sense to me. In the show, the relationship is more campy and silly.

Bonham-Carter's singing voice got in the way a few times -- not strong enough - but overall she was excellent.

Sasha Baron Cohen was a neat surprise as ‘Pirelli' - very nice.

Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin - is there anything this guy can't do? Just wonderful. You really want him to get sliced.

The young kids -- Anthony and Johanna were both excellent.

Some quibbles...

- ‘Have a Little Priest' suffered from being a bit ‘on the nose' for me. In the show, it's just Mrs. Lovett and Sweeney Todd singing to the meat pies.

- I missed the ‘Legend of Sweeney Todd' sung by the chorus.

- Too much blood. I disagree that it was cartoony or 'Pythonesque' -- I found it to be too realistic. Had I been director, I would have been more cartoony with the blood -- perhaps saving the last, more graphic blood spurting for when he offs Judge Turpin.

Same with throwing Mrs. Lovett in the oven. Do we need to see her screaming and burning alive?

Overall, we all really enjoyed it. Certainly not a ‘feel good' movie, but beautifully done.

That Sondheim score is brilliant isn't it?

With this review, I hope they don't make Assassins into a movie.

OK, I haven't seen the film and probably won't until it comes out on DVD...I have the soundtrack and have seen umpteem clips online from the movie...The one thing I am curious about is the background score...Does anyone have an opinion as to how well it plays out? To me, it seems so strange, a Tim Burton film without Danny Elfman involved...But I do understand......

I thought it was just...OK. People who know me know that I like the darker side of things and one would expect I would have liked this more, but...it was just flat for me.

It wasn't an awful movie by any means, though.

The scariest part, for me, was Sacha Baron Cohen's tight, tight pants.
