The trailers have me interested!

Are you all talking about theatrical trailers? Because I've only seen the 30 second TV spots, and they have me more confused than intrigued. I can't figure out if it's horror, disaster flick, sci-fi, or what. It's very disjointed, with little indication of what it's about. And the "Blair Witch"-looking stuff (which takes up about a third of the TV spots) makes me think "been there, done that."

So maybe the longer trailers are intriguing, but IMO the short TV spots are not.

Plus, I've got that built-in prejudice that anything the studios dump on us in January probably sucks. But every year there's at least one good genre movie that obviously isn't "Oscar bait" but very good of its type that gets a January release - maybe this is it.

The teaser-trailer is definitely the best of the advertisements. I give them decent marks for it.

I guess my problem is that 9 times out of 10, with shows like this, the trailer is the best part. As good as the teaser is, I still walk away feeling like they're trying too hard to blow my mind because the movie isn't all that great.

Right now, J. J. Abrams is just a much more talented version of Michael Bay.

I am increasingly getting weary over disaster films taking place in NYC. A little too close to home ... with Sept11th!

What's entertaining about death and destruction when it happens for real?

Now ...
I just might go ... but for only the trailers.

Star Trek websites are saying the first S.T. trailer will be at the front of Cloverfield. Just that alone ... I'll spend the money. And if I get too sick from watching Cloverfield ... I can just walk out.

Apparently the film is supposedly found footage of this monster attacking New York. There's no real story per se that connects the whole movie. Nothing like going from point A to B

Well I thought that was old news...

Cloverfield is the mystifying name given to the "incident" that takes place in the area-formerly-known-as-New-York-City. As stated above, a video is found in the vicinity of Central Park. It consists of a lot of shaky footage of Gen Xers rushing about the city, trying to escape a mysterious critter that is on a rampage.

Some real spoilers:

(This has all been gleaned in a casual troll through the viral marketing on the 'net. Most of this is probably true for the film.)

The critter has been dredged up from the ocean floor by a sinister oil company. It dragged down an oil platform and headed for New York City.

The critter is really, really big and sounds a lot like Godzilla. (But, it is most emphatically NOT Godzilla!)

The critter is apparently accompanied by, or sheds, smaller critters that chase people down and... hurt them.

The viral marketing campaign has spun so wide and so weird that the movie better open on the 18th, or people will start attacking New York City themselves. Among the stuff floating through the 'net:
-- News items in multiple languages about the destruction of the oil platform, as though it were a real news event from a few weeks ago.
-- References to a snack/drink called Slusho.
-- Synergy with the TV shows Heroes and (duh) Lost.
-- Many images conclusively identified as THE monster.
-- An actual farewell party that is to take place on January 17th, starting at 10pm, in Manhattan. Bear in mind the video opens with footage of a farewell party, late on the evening of January 17th. The critter attacks some time after midnight.

Bear in mind that is all coming from the mind of J.J. Abrams, the same guy who has been leading people on, and letting them down, for a couple of years with Lost. I'm only sayin'...

Not interested in seeing it if it's a hand-held camera thing, which it sounds like. Nauseating!

Not sure if it's the same there, but here if you walk out in the first half hour of a movie you can get your money back. I've never done it, but know people who have. So you could see the trailer and if the movie's a turn-off for you, possibly get your money back ...

I've been watching Lost on dvd and it's much easier to take when you watch a few episodes back to back. It's still one of my favorite shows on tv though.

And I'm only sayin' that you're exactly right :)

Hey, if Cloverfield gets absolutely stellar reviews - maybe above 75 or so on Metacritic, then I'll probably check it out. But as it is, I rarely get to see everything I want to see. I still need to get out and see No Country for Old Men, There Will Be Blood, Juno, and American Gangster.
