Who's offended? |

| beamerdog Sat 1/19/2008 8:25a | My son saw the movie last night. His "star" ranking: (spoiler)
Two stars. That's pretty bad for his evaluation. I won't give away any of the plot. |

| oc_dean Sat 1/19/2008 7:39p | Went to Sepulveda Blvd~field :~) .... to-the-area-formally-known-as-the-Sherman-Oaks-Gallery... Which is an open-air complex now ;) .... Marched up to the movie theater there with the full intention of seeing the Star Trek trailer .. and sitting through Cloverfield ... and left! >:[
Apparently ... not all auditoriums throughout the country get the Star Trek trailer attached to Cloverfield. Only _some_ !!
I was PEEVED!
The other person I was with .. is also a major Star Trek fan ... and we gladly demanded our money back and took off!
So ... as many people may know ... JJ Abrams is also producing the next Star Trek film .. along with the (now) released "Cloverfield".
And while his production offices let the Star Trek fan community know the trailer would be attached to Cloverfield ...
Keep in mind ...... If you only want to see that ... and Cloverfield is a "throw away" film .. that you are only interested in seeing because you are already in the theater and settled ........
Do check with the theater ... that the auditorium you are seeing Cloverfield in ... does have the Star Trek trailer.
And I do thank everyone's input on the movie .. here at LP. I've made up my mind ... I REFUSE to sit through it. I will see the much anticipated Star Trek trailer ... and go see another movie! |

I have no problem with them destroying cities in movies, especially NYC, because I can switch between what is real and what is fiction. Others cannot, and want to get offended by works of art. I say just go with the flow and enjoy yourself, escape from reality for 90 minutes, because after all, isn't that the reason why people go to the movies?<<
Wow! You actually make some very good and practical points there!
As part of the latter edge of the "Baby Boomers" generation .. I grew up in the 70s .... right in the thick of Irin Allen's "disaster" film era.
Disaster films really made a big hit in the 70s .. which has basically continued to today.
And I have found myself so drawn into it. Mainly because of the "shock" and "awe" of it all. You know ... It's like it's all so _unreal_. Like ... "oh, that will never happen."
And while I don't think we have to worry about Godzilla sized monsters overtaking any citie on Earth ;) ......... I personally have reached my limit.
It becomes too much, over time.
And for myself ... I am of a sensitive nature. You'll never see me sitting through Saving Private Ryan to Apocalypse Now or Sweeney Todd!
Yeah ... there is a clear distinction as William said.
But for some ... like myself ... it feels like a numbness comes over ... and a blur between the lines .. and growing somewhat desensitized with viewing one too many disaster films over a period of one's life. |

Oh, I'm sure they have their reason in the story, but the reason they used the word "Cloverfield" is pretty obvious if you've ever been to their previous offices. Pretty much at the intersection of Cloverfield and Olympic. |

| ecdc Sun 1/20/2008 12:30p | So the reviews are just as predictable as I thought they'd be. The general consensus seems to be that it's a slightly above average monster/disaster flick. Sorry, but with my limited time to see movies, I'm going to need a lot more than that to get me there.
Don't get me wrong, either. If I'm interested in seeing a movie, I'll see it even if critics don't like it (how else could I possibly own a copy of "Haunted Mansion" on DVD?)
Even 6 or 7 years ago, I probably would've seen this. But that's when I saw just about everything. Now, with kids and other demands, I'm mighty picky about where my money goes. I've seen Juno, Sweeney Todd, and Atonement in the last few weeks. Next up: There Will Be Blood. |
