saw it tonight. It's entertaining, and I enjoyed the great application of the Blair Witch aethetic to the Godzilla mythos with a much stronger structure, but the guy I was with wasn't too thrilled, and there were catcalls at the end from several people.

At the end though, I have to admit the substance felt ..."thin". I'm not sure what I would have added, because basically you're talking about a character/set piece movie... But a couple more characters and a couple more set pieces would have at least given us more bang for our buck.

Ultimately, fun, novel and nifty, but yeah... not extraordinary.

Having just got back myself, I enjoyed it. Then again, I like Godzilla.

Since I get slightly carsick, we were thinking I might not like the format. Pishaw, it was nothing.

I also saw it at the S.O. Arclight and they did have the trailer for Star Trek. If you can call it that. It was more of an advance notice rather than an actual trailer, though.

I agree about the Stat Trek trailer-- it was basically a teaser.

I saw Cloverfield with 16 year old dd. She was feeling very cynical about the film. She really liked it. I thought it was basically a well done monster movie with a modern flair.

I do agree that the collapse of the Woolworth Building, subsequent dust cloud, and people hiding in the building as it passed was in bad taste. The follow up scene, the dust covered street and people emerging from the gloom was also too uncomfortably close to the reality of 9/11. Is everything, even real tragedy, simply fodder for entertainment?

>>I agree about the Stat Trek trailer-- it was basically a teaser.<<

Hence - Teaser Trailer (LOL!).. which is what I was expecting.

So .. from my earlier post ... I didn't make it too clear that I left the theater 2 minutes into Cloverfield.

So ... I went out to the Sherman Oak's Arclight again. This time ... the OTHER auditorium that was running Cloverfield with the Star Trek teaser trailer ... and loved it!!!

Immediately after ... left the theater .. got a voucher to come back for another movie ... and came home .. and threw on the Star Trek the motion picture DVD. :~)

All these posts here on LP told me all I need to know about Cloverfield.

Thanks for the show. That'll do it! ;)

by the way ....
Remember all the hoopla over the first trailer for Star Wars: Phantom Menace. People who went just to see that.

Then in a South Park episode a few years ago .. spoofed it with Stan, Kyle, Cartman, and Kenny running around .. trying to find a home to see the Terrance & Phillip teaser trailer for their big Big Screen film.

I felt like I was living up to the spoof.

I'm curious what other Star Trek fans there are out there .. who saw it .. and left immediately after.

Even though the trailer is online ...
there's nothing like seeing it on the big screen. :D

"The follow up scene, the dust covered street and people emerging from the gloom was also too uncomfortably close to the reality of 9/11."

Apparently we're supposed to be able separate fact from fiction. Fughetaboutit.

Back to the off-topic topic, two weeks ago I saw Sweeney Todd, and afterwards I snuck into National Treasure 2 just to see the Goofy cartoon.

As soon as the cartoon ended, I got up and left, and the entire row of people behind me burst out laughing.

I'm hoping they imagined I had paid for the film, and were not laughing at my ability to pass up National Treasure 2.

I'd already seen the Star Trek trailer online, and was cheered by it, but seeing the Enterprise that big... formative and largely the same ship - that was fun. Very satisfying.

But yeah, not much more to it than that.

I'll tell you what ticked me off... waiting until ALL the credits were over for what was supposed to be an "important payoff" after the credits.

Wasn't worth it.

I'd like to know if they're going to release that piece of music they played over the credits. I thought that was great.
