Yeah, it was pretty disappointing. I thought the guy with the dreadlocks was interesting. At least I wanted to hear more of him which I can't say about more than a few of the entire group of guys.

Posting this before reading any other comments...

I am really surprised at how white the crowd was tonight. And is it just me, or were most of these guys better in the auditions? Anyway...

David Hernandez: Looks positively clean and tailored next to most of this scruffy crowd. (And this is after the makeovers!) Generally I thought this was a good performance. Good vocal variety. Bad finish, though.

Chikezie: I thought he made a bad choice in doing this song in this way. His notes were just all over the place. I found it painful. While I did think he looked OK, he really shouldn't literally argue with Simon.

David Cook: I am astonished the judges liked this. I thought it was sloppy, and found the performer smarmy to a fault. He made "Happy Together" into a downer for me.

Jason Yeager: Choosing a ballad was risky. He strained a bit, and sounded a bit thin in places. Good strong finish, though.

Robbie Carrico: This was fairly solid, though a rather one level performance. No real fireworks. (But get rid of the shmatta, already!)

David Archuleta: Mmmmm. Good song choice, good performance, good strong finish. He made this number his own, too.

Danny Noriega: This was just sappy. He galumphed along on a single note. And what's with the weird expressions? I hate to say it, but he was giving me a creepy Sanjaya vibe.

Luke Menard: This certainly started with promise. The mix was bad, though, making it a bit hard to hear the vocal. The grace notes were too wobbly, and ultimately the performance seemed to go nowhere.

Colton Berry: Bad choice to try such a pop performance of this song. The frenetic moves didn't help.

Garrett Haley: I remember when Neil Sedaka sang this song the second time around, too. This was like a weird karaoke. And it fell apart after the bridge.

Jason Castro: I thought this was just kind of a goony, one note performance. I found it just forgetable.

Michael Johns: Good vocal variety, nice build to the finish, basically a good performance.

If it were my call, I would send Danny Noriega and Chikezie home. Also in danger (I think): Robbie, Luke and Garrett.

But we shall see...

HAHAHA! While watching the show, tonight, my husband said "how long is it going to be before someone calls him this years 'Sanjaya'?

^^absolutely, Mele.

Liked David A. and Michael Johns, but not overwhelmed by any of them. Jason Yeager's kid is cute.

I hope the girls have more talent or this is going to be a very dull season.

Because of that Sanjaya vibe, Danny will stay around for awhile. The young girls love him.

Does anyone else think Garret was going for the Leif Garret teen idol look?

I give props to David A....best performance of the night.

See, I can't really place my finger on it yet, but I can guarantee you RIGHT NOW that *I* will NEVER vote for that David Archuleta punk. Don't like him at ALL and honestly don't think he's all that in the performance arena - just ok.

Anyhow, on to the ladies - did anyone else notice only 11 of them were present last night? The Irish girl wasn't in the audience at any point and I'm wondering if that will be mentioned tonight.

I just checked vote for the worst and they chose Danny for last night. One of the comments on there reminded me of something I was saying last night to DH. How come the judges keep telling the kids to make the song more current when they make them sing songs from the 60s? What's up with that?

(Of course, when they change it up and try to make it different, the judges will tell them they shouldn't mess with the song.)

I really liked a total of three last night. Michael Johns, David Archuleta and Jason Castro. Two I thought were decent Robbie Carico and David Hernandez. The rest were pretty forgettable. Here's hoping the girls will be better.

I found nearly all of them forgettable, and with just a few exceptions, they kind of melded together for me with nobody really standing out. I'm hoping this year is like last year in that the women are a much stronger group collectively, because if they're only as strong as most of these guys, it'll be a long season.

Even David A. made me go "uh-oh" during the first part of his song. He got it together by the end, but it wasn't a good song choice for him. He just about disappeared in the lower register.

Michael Johns was probably the best on balance and is charismatic for sure, and Jason at least has a more distinctive voice than most of the others. And David H. was pleasant to listen to. The others really didn't stand out, except sometimes negatively. A lot of forgettable performances. Not a good night.

I divided the group in 2. I'm don't know anything about "pitchy" or registers, I'm just going by what I liked and didn't like. No particular order to the lists.

Top 6
David H-someone to watch.
Michael-already polished
Jason C -interesting
David A- like the kid
Colton-he surprised me

Bottom 6
Robbie-actually he could be in the top 6,
last night he was just borderline for m
Chi- maybe it was the orange suit
Danny-YES! Sanjaya, that is it. Creepy
Luke-good but not great
Jason Y- good but not great
Garret-oh my, but maybe the tweens will think he's cute?
