Don't know if it's true, but a few entertainment sites have said that David A. has a very demanding "stage father," and if that's so, that could contribute to both his shyness and his nervous demeanor. A shame, if true.

mele - I do know what you mean about his seeming awkward - he just seems a little removed or something. I don't think you sound mean at all--

I don't know anything about his father - hope it's not true.

There have been other idol contestants, that are young (his age). I don't remember any of them acting the way he does, the thing everyone is saying "oh he's young".

Yes, there have. I think there have been some incredibly mature 16 and 17-year olds on American Idol, in fact. Not all kids mature at that same rate, does that come into play here? Or is he just a little strange? I dunno --

I don't know him, just what the kids said that attend school with him, and their comments really only addressed his shyness and the fact that he seems to be well liked by his peers.

Anyway, I wish him well. I like this season--

<Not saying you dislike him, Jim in Merced, I was referring more to earlier posts in this thread :)>

Thanks, GrumpysWife. It's not that I dislike him. And I realize he's young. And he does seem incredibly shy.
And on top of all that, he's an amazing talent.

As I write this, maybe it's just that I feel he's too young for all this attention. And what I'm observing is a kid who's just shell-shocked.

Having been involved in the Industry as an actor, I can't help but feel for these young people. The world can be a harsh place, anyway. And when you add 'The Entertainment Industry' to it, it can be even more brutal.

That's what I was saying about Amanda. She sort of 'got out' before it became too much.

American Idol is a weird show in many regards, isn't it? But incredibly watch-able.

I think you may be right, shell shocked seems like a good description. I can't imagine having the press at you, good or bad, like they do. You'd have to NEVER read anything to survive it, I think.

Is is weird - I laugh about the fact that I'm sitting on the couch in essence judging these kids, all with enormous talent, and having opinions about what they did right/wrong, what they should have done, etc., and I can't carry a tune.

But I love to watch it!

Interesting night tonight overall. Kristy whom I usually don't like was really good. I loved David Cook, again, however he should have credited Chris Cornell, it was not David's arrangement of Billie Jean, it based on or drawn from Chris Cornell's amazing live acoustic of Billie Jean. He should have acknowledged that when the judges were praising him as if he arranged it himself.

We'll see what happens tomorrow!

I think Ryan did say something about it being Chris Cornell's version of Billie Jean. He said it was SOMEBODY's version (other than David's), but it went by too fast to catch it. I guess he must have said Cornell.

My take:

Ramiele (Alone): This song is starting to get overexposed on Idol. I keep waiting for her to really show us what she can do again, and she SORTA did, but you could tell she was under the weather. Even so, she showed some chops. I think she's vulnerable for the bottom 3 though.

Jason (Fragile): Weakest performance of the night for me. The guy is charming, but becoming a one-trick pony. Maybe a trip to the bottom 3 will light a fire under him. His voice is pleasant, but not at all a stand-out.

Syesha (If I Were Your Woman): Very good choice (a Gladys song but not a signature song). And she was excellent - best of the night for me. Randy was on point with his critique, Paula was too (but she always praises). Simon I think has decided unfairly that she's simply not one of the top 5, and basically said that even though that was a fine performance, it was essentially about as good as she'll ever do. Unfairly dismissive, says I.

Chikezie (If Only For One Night): Well sung, and he just has such a pleasing voice. Yeah, okay, it WAS old fashioned and he could have changed it up a bit. But he's already shown with the Beatles stuff that he's capable of putting his own stamp on things, and he just decided to do a straight-forward soul ballad this week. So sue him. Geez. Well done, I thought, if maybe a LITTLE dull.

Brooke (Every Breath You Take): I'm just not feeling Brooke. Simon obviously loves her and has decided she IS top 5 material, but for me... while I have nothing against her, I just don't feel she's that special. And the reason this performance didn't work is not because she let the band come in. It's because (and none of the judges got this) she didn't connect to the lyric. That song has a real undercurrent of menace to it; interpretation is fine, but that menace is INHERENT in that song, and if you jettison it, you don't have that song. And Brooke may be many things, but menacing is not one of them.

Michael Johns (We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions): The voice cracked near the end, and he let the backups do the line alone, but other than that he finally picked a song(s) that played to his strengths. He'll be around for a while based just on this, I think.

Carly (Total Eclipse of the Heart): Thank God they limited it to 2 minutes; otherwise she's still be singing it. Seriously, though, Simon nailed this one dead on - well sung, but sort of one-note intensity instead of any sort of modulated emotion.

David A (You're the Voice): I didn't know this song, and thought it was a little sappy. Nice to see his voice adapt WELL to an uptempo for once, but it was still just fair to middling for me. When Simon said it was a "theme park" performance that made him picture lots of "ghastly little animals" I had to laugh. I didn't think it was as bad as the generic princess voices singing about "magic" and "wishes" that seem to be in every dang live Disney show these days, but I knew where Simon was coming from.

Kristy (God Bless the USA). A very canny choice. She's already got the country fan audience by default, and now she just threw them a big old piece of red meat. This may take her out of the bottom 3 and even let her last several weeks as long as she's adequate and not bad going forward.

David C (Billie Jean): Very well done. Yeah, another slow emo-type rendition and he'll need to change that up eventually (I guess Day Tripper did, to be fair), but it worked. He really does have quite a good voice. And the smugness quotient was way down. If he can keep that down... he's actually growing on me.

Still hate his hair, though.

Top 2 for us last night were David C and Michael. Bottom 2, Chikezie and Jason, not that they were bad, just good, yet outstanding.

It's strange because I still like all of them. No one to feel snarky about this season.

Ok- Yeah I am reading now that Ryan did say that, but I guess I missed it from the noise and so did the judges, because they seemed to believe David made that arrangement, like I did. Chris Daughtry already made that boo-boo during his season, not giving credit where credit is due.
