Last night was okay, but nobody blew me away, which is what I watch these early shows to see. What - did they pass maybe 4 people on camera, and then say at the very end "And 30 more people from San Diego made it through!" and showed 5 seconds of each jumping up and down.

^^I thought the same thing. I guess since it was only a hour, they had to cut something. So they showed us the bad (for entertainment?) knowing we'll see the rest once they are in Hollywood.

Yeah him there was few things wrong with him. The most important being he was some weird New Agey free love hippie.

Kind of low key again last night. I'll admit I'm liking this approach of the judges being slightly kinder. I thought the brother and sister duo were hilarious mostly the brother though. And he had a pretty good voice. I loved Simon messing with the abstaining cheerleader. Yeah she was annoying but seemed like a good kid. The story about London was very nice of course I didn't really notice her singing, if you know what I mean. As for Aretha, I didn't think she was overtly terrible, but you know learn how to take no with some dignity. Same thing for the kid who sang the Jennifer Hudson song, what an idiot he was. Now compare that to the last guy the one with the baby. He took it all in stride and was very gracious, plus I think he knew what really mattered.

I agree with your post, DAR.

We got the feeling that Simon let the abstinence chick through just because he knew that she wasn't good enough to win and he wanted to experience some failure and lose some of her innocence. I really thought she was annoying. (And her speech was pretty lame. I don't think she's winning many converts with it. If you want people to not have sex, you've got to have an AMAZING speech. LOL) She just gave us the impression that she's spent her entire life being told how undeniably FAN-tastic she is and really hasn't entertained the idea that she might not be the bestest little girl in the world. It seemed obvious to my family that Simon felt the same way and that's why he said she could go to Hollywood.

I know that sounds harsh (she really annoyed me) but I'd be shocked if that wasn't Simon's motivation.

Above all, I am glad that they aren't showing the judges being really cruel. It's unnecessary, these people do a good enough job of humiliating themselves. LOL

<<As for Aretha, I didn't think she was overtly terrible, but you know learn how to take no with some dignity.>>

She certainly had the lungs to be a great singer.

Treading carefully here, but those ahem "lungs" were bordering on obnoxious.

>>I actually hate the fact that they intentionally pass through bad singers (remember, they go through an audition/vetting process long before they see Randy, Paula, and Simon) just so we the audience can laugh at them. It's cruel. If they pass the initial auditions, they've been set up thinking they're pretty good, and they've been set up to be laughed at.<<

I've actually been meaning to respond to this, because I'm really torn at this part of the show. I certainly don't approve or like it when they set up someone who obviously isn't "all there." I don't necessarily mean mentally handicapped, but we all know people who we'd perhaps say is "slow" or a little "out of touch." I don't like it when those people get put through and made fun of. And sometimes there's people that are just genuinely really nice, and I feel bad for them too.

On the other hand, there's a strange part of me that just loves to see people get a reality check. I'm almost embarrassed to say it, and it's pretty childish, but I really love to see certain kinds of people get a wake up call. It's the same reason I read snopes.com everyday, why Penn & Teller: B.S. is one of my favorite shows, etc. I know it's stupid and my own character flaw, but I just cringe when people insist on believing things that aren't reality. And I don't mean just a little off-base; we all make mistakes and I'm sure my head's full of incorrect information. But rather, something that's like an urban legend or just practically the opposite of reality. Whether it's Barack Obama is a strict Muslim, or Walt Disney is cyrogenically frozen, or I'm the greatest singer in the world, it just drives me nuts.

So there is a part of me, probably inhabited by Satan himself, that enjoys watching people who think they're the next American Idol, get the wake up call from the judges.
