Ingredients:
2 or 4 slices sourdough bread, cut 1 to 1 1/2 inches thick 1 banana 1/3 cup sugar 1 teaspoon cinnamon 1 egg 1/4 cup milk 1/2 teaspoon vanilla oil or shortening for frying whipped butter and/or syrup
Method:
Cut a 1-inch pocket in one side of each bread slice. Cut banana in half crosswise, then split each piece lengthwise. Remove peel and stuff two pieces of fruit in each pocket of bread; set aside. Mix sugar and cinnamon; set aside. Mix together well the egg, milk and vanilla.
Heat about 4 inches of oil in a pan to 350 º F. Dip stuffed bread into egg/milk mixture and let it soak a few seconds to let penetrate bread. Fry bread on both sides in hot oil until lightly browned, about 3 minutes. Drain on paper towels or wire rack. Sprinkle with cinnamon sugar and serve.

Serves 4
I like the addition of vanilla in yours.

It is WONDERFUL!!! It has waffles, pancakes, pound cake, strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, banannas, custard and pastery cream!!! It is to die for. I had three helpings and then asked for the recipe, which our server graciously gave us. |

I got the bread yesterday and am going to try it this morning! Thanks!! Unfortunately, the Poly ambiance will have to wait until August! |

| davewasbaloo Mon 3/17/2008 3:21a | Tonga Toast is pretty awesome.
I also really like the breakfast curry at Boma. Not to mention their grilled meats.
Also, the breakfast platter with pancakes is pretty good at Whispering Canyon |

That sounds like something that would go over well here in Japan! :p
(along with breakfast rice, breakfast soup, and breakfast rotten soybeans, along with (of course) breakfast fish) |

| davewasbaloo Mon 3/17/2008 4:53a | Ya, it was kind of cool. It was sausages and biscuits in a curry sauce. Not what I would normally have for breakfast, but I tried it and really liked it.
I mean, people have Heuvos rancheros and Breakfast Burritos. And people in the UK turn their nose up at the idea of cold pizza for breakfast (one of my favorites).
But yep, having dumplings and rice is not my fav breakfast, but I know many Asians who love it. |

| kangaand2roos Tue 3/18/2008 2:17p | Thanks Davewasbaloo. I am well as are thee kids and DH, and it's good to bee back. I had to do a bit of a Disney Detox as it was sort of ruling my life (LOL) but I am back in moderation now! It really is nice to "see" everyone and so many familiar names!
I hope to get to see some LP'ers in August!
Back on topic...
I made Tonga Toast yesterday morning and other than the burn on the roof of my mouth (let it cool a bit before eating!) it was awesome!! DH really liked it too, but thought it was more of a dessert than a breakfast. I guess he has a point! Won't stop me though! |
