<<Time out. A pickpocketing is not a robbery. "Robbery" is theft under threat of violence. Thus, by definition, robbery is a crime of violence. Having one's pocket picked is just plain old theft. I'm sorry you had your pocket picked, but it's much less serious then you led us to believe.>>

LOL, well, I wasn't really all that specific the first time around, but wanted to clarify because I was giving people the misconception the second you clear customs, you should expect to be gagged and kidnapped with all your possesions stolen ;D.

But with that said, I just thought a robbery meant anytime someone lifted something from someone that wasn't theirs or without permission? According to your definition, what about someone that breaks into somebodies car in the middle of the night and takes it? What about somebody that busts in somebody else's home and steals their TV or something when they know no one is home? These aren't consider 'robberies'? Not arguing, really just curiuos, but where I'm from we just say robbery, but I guess most just get the two wordings switched anyway.

Okay, just thought about it. I guess those examples would be considered bulgaries and not robberies right? But if someone was in the house or car, THEN it would be a robbery, correct?

But, I guess when someone had their stuff robbed (I had a friend once whose DID get bulgarized, his TV was taken....by another neighbor lol), the first thing he said was 'I was robbed.' but it was clearly when he wasn't home.

Okay, I'm thinking about his too much now ;).

WD, I really didn't mean to pick nits with what you said, but when you said that you had been robbed in the Philippines, I imagined that you had been "held up."

Generally speaking, a "theft" is the taking of property that does not belong to you. Some might just call this "stealing." "Grand Theft" is a theft of an item over a specific value, or the theft of a named item (automobile, gun) of any value. A Theft or a Grand Theft is bad. In the US, generally speaking, a theft is a misdemeanor and a grand theft is felony.

A "burglary" is the combination of a theft and a trespass. Regardless of the value of the item stolen, a burglary is considered worse than just a plain theft because in addition to the theft, you've violated someone else's private space, such as their home. In most US states, a burglary is a felony regardless of the value of the item taken.

A "robbery" is the combination of a theft and a threat of violence. The thread of violence can be anywhere from a "strongarm" robbery where the implicit threat is a punch in the arm to the threat of having one's head blown clean off by a shotgun. So, a robbery is worse than a burglary and much worse than a theft, and in most US states, is always a felony regardless of the value of the item stolen.

I didn't mean to get so much into the legal-eze of these terms. When you said that you had been robbed in the Philippines, I assumed that you meant it literally.

ORDDU: The only bright spot for Hong Kong Disneyland is that they're saying It's a Small World is going to be opening at the end of April 2008 and that it has cost the company more to put this latest one together than it cost to build Space Mountain. But we speculate that it's due to inflation. They simply need a lot more attractions before the average guest will be convinced that this little park is worth paying admission for.

No worries SD, it just made me realize I been using the wrong terms all these years ;).

And yes Bob, HKDL still sucks! That may be consistent for a very long time unfortuantely.

***Having one's pocket picked is just plain old theft. I'm sorry you had your pocket picked, but it's much less serious then you led us to believe.***

So what are you supposed to say in this case anyway, "I got theifted"?

I understand the legalese part of it, but I would think anyone upon getting something stolen from them would probably say "I got robbed", or "I got ripped off" maybe...I dunno, maybe not.

It may be the world's worst magic kingdom, but it's not the world's worst Disney park: that honor goes entirely and deservedly to Walt Disney Studios Paris. Merde!

Maybe the worst Disney park of the lot but still not really a bad little park when you think about it. Any park that has attractions like Tower of Terror, Rock N Roller Coaster, Crush Coaster, Cinemagique, and the Cars Stunt Show really is not that bad in my opinion. Also the recent theming to the park looks really good, and as that article on LaughingPlace states today more big changes are on the way, including that Rataouille attaction.
