1	FiveBearRugs Tue 1/29/2008 10:33p	I recently got my copy of Wave 1's "Disneyland USA" in the mail, courtesy of a hard-fought victory on eBay (only TWO bidders dared to win my set). I loved the poster gallery (I really, really wish they would do a book with all the attraction posters), and skimmed through part of the opening day ceremonies (gave me goosebumps and flashbacks to the 50th). I already had The DL Story and DL After Dark recorded from Vault Disney, and the 10 Anniversary Show was fun to watch, even though I just saw it on "Your Host Walt Disney", lol. And yes, it was LAAAAAAAAME that they had to put a discloser during the firewalkers in the Tahitian Terrace segment. I honestly think that if Disney wasn't so prudish about the Treasures, then they could have done well for the company. Here's how I would have redone the sets, including the Legacy sets, which I have not seen yet: -First, I think I would eliminate the blue sleeve altogether, and maybe save the tins for the animated shorts. -Second, I would slap the "Walt Disney Presents" title on the anthology DVDs. Yes, I realize that's not the official title, but I think it could work well for this collection. -Third, no more limited editions, especially with Mickey, Donald, et al. -Leonard Maltin stays as host; he's fine and I don't have a problem with him. -EVERYTHING stays uncut. I'm sure Disney can afford to pay royalties...remind me to start a topic about that in the Entertainment section...where was I? Oh yes, I'm sure Disney can afford to pay royalties for cast members and songs. -Everything will range from 2-6 discs, if possible. -Mickey, Donald, Pluto and Goofy: I would have released these as you would the box sets of television shows. Looney Tunes and a lot of the Hanna Barbera cartoons are doing; ditto for Ducktales and the other Disney Afternoon shows. Mickey would also be released in chronological order. I mean these are gold mines right here and I'm sure there are millions of fans over the world who want a complete set of Mickey and Donald cartoons. Of course when the sets are finished, like Mickey's, you would have the obligatory mega box set of that one character. Has anyone seen the mega box sets for Seinfeld, Full House, The Brady Bunch or Everybody Loves Raymond? (I noticed that there were some Donald/Goofy shorts that were on Donald's set, but not Goofy's. I think that's merely because they didn't or couldn't do a second volume for Goofy. I think they could've managed that: put the Donald/Goofy shorts on his set, along with Mickey's Revue, How to Ride a Horse, El Gaucho Goofy, the Freewayphobia shorts, Soccermania, A Goofy Movie, the Mickey Mouseworks Goofy Shorts and perhaps a few episodes of Goof Troop.) -Walt Disney Presents: Legendary Heroes; So we had the complete Davy Crockett. That's fine, I'm sure it did well. This would be the first title in this release. Other legendary heroes would get a test run like Elfego Baca Volume 1 and have, oh, his first five episodes (I know his and Swamp Fox's were scattered about) -Walt Disney Presents: The Mickey Mouse Club; MMC, Spin and Marty and The Hardy Boys would stay the same. If I recall, there was a Best of Original MMC that was out on DVD a few years ago. -Walt Disney Presents: Disneyland; Volume 1 would have included the first episode of DL and the last episode of DL before the Park opened, assuming that the last episode WAS about the park. I would also include Dateline DL, and if DL '59 was still "lost" at the time, it would have been replaced with Gala Day at DL, which is similar but in color. Volume 2 would then have DL 59, plus DL After Dark, DL Goes to the World's Fair and the 10th Anniversary Show. In other words, everything that's already been on the DL sets would be on these sets, albeit in chronological order. -The Silly Symphonies (in order), the Rarities, Oswald and Tomorrowland would retain the Treasures name. The Rarities would include Alice and Oswald. -All the DL episodes featuring behind the scenes studio stuff would be in the same set. Hmmm...now I'm confusing myself. Let's try a chart, shall we? WALT DISNEY TREASURES -The Chronological Mickey Mouse, Volumes 1-4 -The Complete Goofy -The Chronological Donald Duck, Volumes 1-5; (There is no way the set can be finished in four waves. My money's on 5, with 6 being the most) -The Complete Pluto, Volumes 1-2 -Disney Rarities, Volumes 1-?; All the one-shot cartoons, including The Small One, John Henry, Scrooge McDuck and Money (doesn't really count, but it kind of fits in with the theme), Casey's Daugthers and the other Humphrey cartoon that wasn't in the first set (weren't there three altogether?) will be here. Also included will be all of Oswald's shorts and the remaining Alice Comedies. Maybe those educational Jiminy Cricket Shorts can be included too. And "It's Tough to Be a Bird". -The Complete Silly Symphonies, Volumes 1-2 VAULT DISNEY: THE MICKEY MOUSE CLUB -MMC: The First Week and the 25th Anniversary Special -MMC: Spin and Marty -MMC: The Hardy Boys -MMC: Annette -MMC: Corky and the White Shadow -MMC: Adventures in Dairyland -MMC: The Complete First Season -MMC: The Complete Second Season -MMC: The Complete Third Season According to Wikipedia... "The series ran on ABC Television for an hour each weekday in the 1955-1956 and 1956-1957 seasons (from 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.), and only a half-hour weekdays (5:00 to 5:30 p.m.) in 1957-1958, the final season to feature new programming. Although the show aired for the 1958-1959 season (5:00 to 5:30 p.m.), these programs were shows from the first two seasons, re-cut into a half-hour format. Also DL's Secrets, Myths, Legends and Hush-Hush Stuff WALT DISNEY PRESENTS: SPOOKY FUN This Ultimate Edition set will come in a black and purple tin and will include Our Unsung Villains, Disney's Greatest Villains, A Disney Halloween and Disney's Halloween Treat. All proceeds will go to UNICEF and St. Jude's. This way, all the sets can have their own little niche, if you will. Perhaps the mega-sets (let's say all 5 volumes of DL and all 4 of Mickey) will come in really nice tin sets. The regular sets will also come with the limited edition artwork. So that's my little scenario...until I realize I may have forgotten some items. What would you guys do?
2	FerretAfros Tue 1/29/2008 10:47p	Wow...you definately put a lot of thought into this. While it would be nice to have everything nice and ordered like that, I also kind of like what they have now. With all these different series going on, it would become pretty difficult to track which ones are coming out when. They currently have another series of shorts (I think it's the best of each character or something), but I really just ignore it. With the Treasures, for me at least, I know it's a dependable name that I can trust. Also, each year, I know it's coming and can plan for it. With all the different series, they would probably have individual DVD's coming out all year long, making it tough to get them all at once (they tend to be in time for Christmas, except one year when they came out in May, just in time for my birthday). I also feel like it would be a lot more questionable how good the content is. With the Treasures, I know that it's great stuff that's top of the line. If they split them all up, the branding (yuck...I feel so corporate) would really get dilluted.
3	FiveBearRugs Wed 1/30/2008 12:51a	Sigh...lol...crap, I forgot to add "Zorro" to the Legendary Heroes series. Arrgh...and I forgot the True-Life Adventures for the Walt Disney Presents line-up. I suppose each wave would last a year. A new set every two months. So Wave 1 would be Mickey Volume 1, DL Volume 1, MMC Volume 1 and so forth. Instead of 4 sets at one time, you'd have 7 throughout the year... With the inclusion of DL USA, I now have 10 of the Treasures. The other 9 are the Donalds, the Rarities, Goofy, Front Lines, Behind the Scenes, DL: Secrets, Myths and Legends and Your Host Walt Disney. Which Treasures does everyone else have?
4	mawnck Wed 1/30/2008 5:39a	Great list, and would that it were possible. Unfortunately, much of what you're asking for simply is not economically feasible. You'd drive Disney bankrupt in a few years. For instance: >>-MMC: The Complete First Season -MMC: The Complete Second Season -MMC: The Complete Third Season<< Neither viable nor watchable. Each one would be a 30 to 60-disc-set of the same segments running over and over and over, including a ton of color cartoons without the color, and around 260 copies of the same performance of "We're the Mouseketeers". They'd sell about 6 copies, and only two of those people would make it past disc 20. The film transfers alone would be far more than they'd ever make back on it, never mind mastering, packaging, merketing, and royalties. Remember, they also have to convince retailers to carry this stuff and non-Disney-freaks to buy it if it's going to make a profit. Disney freaks alone aren't a big enough market to make your typical built-from-scratch DVD profitable, although it might seem like it if you hang out here in LP a lot. However, as digital distribution continues to take over, this material might become more viable, so keep dreamin'. As for me, I've got money in hand waiting to buy SOTS (natch), Dad Can I Borrow the Car and other assorted Ward Kimball wierdness, a set that includes Disneyland Showtime, that last Donald set, DECENT transfers of Snow White, Dumbo, Little Mermaid and Peter Pan (the 6th time's the charm, right?), uncensored versions of the censored movies including Snow White and Fantasia dang it ya wimps, the Pooh shorts as shorts with correct aspect ratio, an uncut Disneyland opening special, a widescreen Goofy Movie (shuddup, it's good), BOTH versions of Lady and the Tramp, a remastered Oswald that runs at 18 FPS like it's supposed to, and a widescreen One and Only Genuine Original Family Band (guilty pleasure). See, I'm dreamin' too. Oh, and Only Yesterday, the only Studio Ghibli theatrical release the US has been deprived of. They really need to get on this one. I don't, and never have, cared if they're in a tin box or not. The tin boxes do not improve the picture quality one bit. Bonus points for BluRay. Even more bonus points (and money from me) if the BluRay dual-aspect-ratio flicks from the 60s and 70s contain BOTH the uncropped full-frame and (correctly) cropped widescreen versions. But I'll form a mob with torches and pitchforks and storm Burbank if they start cropping the old 4x3 movies. Just so everybody knows. (/soapbox)

I know that the older ones did have more bonus stuff, but the ones they're releasing these days offer more unique main features, so the thousands of bonuses seem superfulous. Will I keep buying all of them? Probably, unless they really drop the quality level of them or offer them in something I just have no interest in (I was almost there with Elfago Baca, but I really enjoyed that, so I may just have to check them out anyway). Does that make me one of those people who will just buy anything they put out there? Probably. Does that bother me? Not at all.
7	FiveBearRugs Wed 1/30/2008 10:31p	Dang it, I forgot to put SOTS in the Treasures line... I'm a Goofy fan, and I still have not rented A Goofy Movie...perhaps tomorrow. I suppose we'll just stick with the first week of MMC, the 25th Anniversary, and a 2-3 disc Best of Set... I was thinking of placing the Pooh shorts in the Rarities section, but wasn't sure if they "counted" as well. Love the feedback guys!
8	FerretAfros Wed 1/30/2008 11:02p	While I would really like to see them release SOTS, I just don't see why it would go in with the Treasures. Sure, that way it gets the nice little intro from Leonard Maltin about how things that used to be acceptable aren't anymore and why we should still be allowed to watch it, and what to watch it for in terms of story telling. However, there is nothing that really seperates SOTS from any other feature made under Walt, except that this one is so controversial (while I personally think "What Makes the Red Man Red?" from Peter Pan far worse than anything SOTS offers, but who listens to me?). It would be really out of place in a series of DVD's that's based in series, whether they are series of shorts, related films (like the True Life Adventures, even though they were technically Legacy), or related TV segments. Something that they all have in common is that they all have several components. I feel like SOTS would be fitting to be released under the same title as Destino (what ever happened to Wave 2 of the Legacy's?), as they are both single shot deals, but have a lot more to them than just that. While I have no idea what would be included in Destino to fill out two disks, SOTS could have a 15-20 minute thing on appropriatness (hopefully they can do it without being preachy) in addition to the required thing at the beginning, something about the restoration process, commentaries, explinations of how it led to other developments, and top it all off with a mini-documentary on Splash Mountain. I'm sure there is plenty there for 2 disks, but I'm not sure if the Treasures line is the right place for it.

10	basil fan Sat 2/2/2008 11:34a	I guess SOTS would go in with the Treasures because it's a less-mainstream way to release a DVD and might get less publicity (and less flack) that way. If it ever was released, I guess I'd have to buy 2 copies and get them right away, knowing it could be pulled from the shelves any time the winds of public opinion blew the wrong way.
