Thanks

My preferences of Airports.

1. Long Beach (LGB)

2. John Wayne (Santa Ana/Orange County/SNA).

Both of these airports are about 14 miles away from the DLR area, Long Beach is the slower of the 2 airports, but the drawback, not too many flights service the airport, Jet Blue has the most flights, Alaska Airlines has service thru Seattle/Tacoma, and there are a few commuter flights.

John Wayne has a lot more flights, but like Long Beach, has government limits on the amount of flights that can land at the airport (For example, Jet Blue is starting to fly out of LAX, since it can't get the rights for additional landing at LGB). The restriction on flights does limit the "specials" you can find on airfare, Southwest has very little discounted airfares, especially the lower levels. So you might need to look elsewhere.

The next set of Airports are about 35 miles away from the DLR area.

3. LAX

4. Ontario (ONT)

And while technically Ontario is slightly closer than LAX (less than a mile), I recommend LAX due to the greater number of flights, and the transportation options.

LAX is serviced by the Disneyland Express Airport Bus, and the Shuttle Van fares are a lot cheaper from LAX than from Ontario, due to competition.

Ontario is fairly modern, and has been built for a lot more traffic than it is currently is getting. It is operated by the same airport authority as LAX, and they are trying to push the use of Ontario as a substitute for LAX.

If you use Ontario, your basic option of transportation is a Rental Car (I like using Hotwire.com to see the current discounted rates for my planned trip). The drive can be a bit long due to rush hour traffic.

My last option is Bob Hope (Burbank/BUR), this is over 40 miles away, and the traffic on the I-5 can be bad any time of the day.

So I would look at LGB and John Wayne and then compare the airfares as compared to the other locations. If there is a significant savings, I would then think about using LAX or ONT, but then take into consideration the additional transportation costs (including Hotel Parking fees) that might offset the savings on the air fare.

I vote for LGB. The flight was cheaper, the car rental was cheaper, too. The ONLY bad thing, was that it wasn't non-stop on Express jet...Ontario is.

A lay-over in Reno can't be that bad...could be worse. There's an added bonus to be considered as well. Longer flight = more $1 beer.

We went through Ontario airport last May and are doing it again this May. It was nice because there were way fewer people than at LAX the last time I was there, and we did not get lost in the airport. It was easy to find were we needed to go at Ontario airport. We walked out of the airport and right onto a Super Shuttle - almost no wait. The shuttle ride was about 30 or 40 minutes.

I guess it depends where 'your' airline goes.

Do you remember what the shuttle cost you, WestWind?

dlkozy, I checked my records (yes I still have all my "May 2007 DL trip" paperwork) and see we paid $94 for the SuperShuttle trip from the airport to Hojos which got us the entire van to ourselves (6 of us). The return trip was $84 - less because I did not reserve the entire van. The van we were in seats max 7 and if your group does not fill it, I hear they may wait to try and fill it. I booked and paid for the Shuttle online before we left home but I don't think there was any real benefit to this. Haven't decided if I will pre-book the next one or not yet. A tip for the driver would add to the cost.

I checked their web site and it says the cost from Ontario airport to HoJos is $41 for the first person and $9 for each additional person. www.supershuttle.com

I vote for LGB. Getting to and from DL is the easist since you litterly drive straight out of the airport parking lot, go straight for 20-30 minutes, and you are there. Also, there is an In N Out Burger, somewhat along the way. Yum.

Our favorite is John Wayne because of the size and location. It's small enough that when get off the plane we walk out and can get right on a shuttle or catch a cab and it's 20 minutes to Disneyland hotels. We've never had to wait long through security either and in fact this last trip we were the only ones walking through security at the time. The airport is clean and well laid out. They even have pretty good food there if you need to eat before getting on the plane.

For airport transportation, we are 2 adults and 2 kids and the Super Shuttle to the hotel was $30+ tip (the driver was nice and didn't charge us for our 2 year old) and we caught a mini van cab from the GCH and that was $37+ tip to the airport door.

I also want to say that I do NOT recommend taking the "Disney Express" which is run by Coach America. They have been nothing but unprofessional and often late and disorganized. We almost decided to give it another go and use them this trip but when the driver picking up outside of GCH didn't even know which route was his on the printed brochure route schedule, I decided clearly nothing has improved. It was cheaper (by about $16) and quicker taking a cab anyway.
