| dresswhites Tue 2/26/2008 11:43a | i read over at mice age, that suposely they are adding different disney characters to the various scenes. for example peter pan in the england scene, mulan for the china scene, lilo and stich for the hawaii scene. also al talks about removing the rain forest scene and instead putting a scene of the usa. i don't know, i really don't like the idea of these changes. i just don't think disney characters like peter pan will mesh well with the dolls. the disney characters have a whole different style from the characters in small world. and stich? he is an alien! he doesn't have anything to do about world culture. also i don't think they need a whole usa room. i think there is a reason that walt and his imagineers didn't design a whole usa room. i think it is because they realized we are in the usa! the rain forest scenes is a smooth transition to the finale scene. ugh i just don't know about these changes. thoughts also i would post a link to mice age, but i don't know how. |

>>But it now appears that the inside of the attraction will be quite different from the original 1964 version that has hosted tens of millions of Disneyland over the years. Imagineers have recently been inside the ride placing temporary cutouts of Disney characters in scenes along the flume trying to determine where those characters would look the best in each scene.
The concept of adding Disney characters to it's a small world was first introduced as a way to make the attraction more interesting to contemporary Chinese audiences at the Hong Kong Disneyland version of the boat ride that opens later this year. A cartoonish version of Peter Pan will fly around Big Ben in the United Kingdom scene, Lilo and Stitch will surf through the Polynesian scene, Simba will take up residence with the rest of the wildlife in the African room, etc. After that concept was approved for Hong Kong and the Disney figures created to sit alongside the traditional dolls and animals, attention has now turned to the original version of the ride in Anaheim.
Even though it's a small world has remained one of Disneyland's most popular attractions for decades, and still pulls in over 2,000 riders per hour on busy days, Imagineering has received Ed Grier's blessing to "plus up" the old attraction by adding Disney Characters throughout the original 1964 show scenes. It should be interesting to see how Disneyland's PR department spins that one, especially when the Disney purists catch wind of it.<< |

| mickeycanuck Tue 2/26/2008 12:05p | We should boycott iasw this Summer! Or just stand near the construction walls and look rather upset. This is bad news. Just fix the troughs and leave the scenes alone. Mickey and Stitch don't belong in iasw, they can mess up HKDL's version but leave the original Under Original Management. Show some respect to Mary Blair, Rolly Crump, Alice Davis and others and their perfect creation. Peter Pan flying around Big Ben indeed. Hey let's shoehorn some Pixar characters in there while we're at it. Remy in France, Nemo with the mermaids... iasw is popular enough without this "plussing". Sometimes a plus is a minus. Don't Do It |

Bear in mind that Walt and Co. already "plussed" the attraction when they brought it back to California. And there have been numerous changes over the years. I just hope that whatever they do will honor the original, and that any changes made will be improvements. |

| Sport Goofy Tue 2/26/2008 12:13p | I think IASW is due for an updating. Cartoon characters, however, are not the answer.
I can imagine adding some new kinetic energy to IASW with some large dynamic video displays that depict faces from around the world. I'm thinking something along the lines of the huge screens that operate at the animation attraction at DCA. Something like that could be integrated in IASW and still maintain the overall artistic direction of the original attraction.
In this age of interactivity, that seems to be all the rage, how about a way to stream video from all the other IASW attractions around the globe. Certainly, time zones won't always match up when all the rides are operating simultaneously, but wouldn't it be fun to see in real time Disney guests from around the world embarking on the happiest cruise that ever sailed?
I'm sure there's 10,000 other things that could be done to improve IASW without adding cartoon characters. |

| plpeters70 Tue 2/26/2008 12:17p | I've been waiting to hear something like this ever since they announced that new version for Hong Kong. I knew it would be too much for Disney to resist -- just imagine all the stuff they'll be able to sell in the gift shop now with cute little Disney characters in the style of Small World!! How disgusting...
You know, this idea just screams "Cheap Marketing". What if when Mattel was the sponsor they had taken out the whimsical "toys" found throughout the attraction and replaced them with very specific Mattel offerings - like Barbie? People would have screamed bloody murder - and rightfully so. How is what Disney is doing any different??? They've turned a ride about world peace into an advertisement.

| plpeters70 Tue 2/26/2008 12:52p | "This change will be the end of IASW !!!!!"
Well, I wouldn't go that far - in fact, I'm sure this change will be quite popular with today's Disneyland guests who seem to really like all these character additions; and endless marketing of dreams, wishes and magic.
But this type of thing just doesn't appeal to me. I grew up liking a Disney company that was as interested in Science, History and Future technology as it was in cartoon characters and magic. But that company just doesn't seem to exist anymore, and the more they skew towards just cartoons and magic, the less I want to come back. But I'm sure they'll find plenty of people who only want cartoons and dreams while on vacation. People like me will eventually just have to find something else to entertain them...
