What really stands out to me from that video is how much movement there is, everywhere. Each scene is packed with dolls, and several turntables. When it moved to DL, I think everything got spread out a bit, making it less impactful. They also seem to have turned a lot of things down a little. The can can girls for example really look like they're just flicking their ankels out in the video, but on the ride it's very mechanical and slow. I believe the Dutch tulips haven't rocked for years, and many of the spinning canopies barely move at all these days. I don't know why they have changed, but it definately looks like a whole lot of stuff was toned down from what it once was. Even the plastic strips in the rainforest (and in the video Scandanavia too, where did those go?) seem to be moving a bunch, where on the ride they just hung there looking silly. It's the movement that makes them believable. Are a couple fans from WalMart really going to break DL's budget? I don't know what all's planned for this refurb, but I would love to see the level of movement and excitement seen in the video come back to the DL attraction.

Lots of things have come and gone from the ride over the years. I used to be able to spot the changes but over time, it's all faded away. I recall, for example, that the chess pieces in England were added sometime in the late 70s or early 80s. Stuff was changed out.

The hippo also changed color too, from green to pink. There really have been all kinds of minor changes to the attraction over the years that go by mostly unnoticed.

Oh, and there's a great interview over on UltimateDisney.com with Alice Davis. She's got some great things to say about It's a Small World. Things that make me not want the potential changes even more. Here's a great quote from her...

"I remember asking him how much I was allowed to spend on the Small World costumes, and he said, "Alice," he said, "I have a building over there with people that work out what we spend on things. I don't want you to worry about that. I just want you to make the most beautiful clothes for these dolls that any child from the age of one up to a hundred would love to have for themselves and be able to play with." And he said, "I just want very beautiful costumes. Whatever it costs, the men over there will figure out how to pay for it -- it's not our worry. We want to give people more than what they expect and if we do, they will always come back and they will enjoy coming to see what we're doing." But, he said, "if you cheat them, they'll never come back." So he said, "we give them the best," and that was the most marvelous answer I ever got from anybody."

And, here's another one...about changes to the attraction...

"I think Small World was one that I enjoyed doing [most]. I was very proud that it came off as well as it has and that it's still going strong. It was started in '63... it was a success in New York and it came out here and it's been a success in every park, in France, in Japan, now in China, as well as here [California] and Florida. Every group that comes along to take care of it, they always want to change something.
And people say, "Don't you get upset when they change this?" and I say I only get upset when they don't talk to me. If they do something better than I could and put it in, I applaud them. It's their right, but if they change something and it doesn't work, I keep my mouth shut. But at the same time, I mumble to myself about it because I want everything to be exactly the way Walt wanted it, beautiful for everybody to enjoy."

Both things speak volumes about the way Walt wanted things, and the way things at the company are these days.

That was a great post. Thanks for sharing. I think Mary Blair summed it up nicely with this comment, "If they do something better than I could and put it in, I applaud them". That seems to be the problem with many of the changes lately; they don't make the attraction BETTER. The Treehouse and Pirates on TSI are good examples.

Well, if people are choosing not to go to Disneyland because they are upset, mad, angry, disgusted, or down right pissed off, then I say hurray. That makes fewer people I don't have to stand behind in line. ;)

Thanks for that video. I wouldn't mind getting a copy of that DVD, what's it called?

The fuzzy jaguar is indeed very different from DLP's "leopard" though it's a similar pose. I think I prefer DLP's as the fuzziness seems a bit odd.

Other than DLP the only version I have riden is WDW where I think if memory serves their big cat looks more like DLP's so I just assumed they were all like that.

Great quotes, BTW!!!
