"The ride was fine without them? They don't match artistically? They have nothing to do with what the ride has to say? It's an overdone thing with these characters in every corner of the park with no escaping them?"

but i thought people said that characters should be kept in fantasyland.

:)

just joking. we don't even know if this is happening.

remember when the same author wrote that Space Mountain was getting an Stitch overlay?

That was a joke that was taken way to serious by a writer and then fueled the boards like crazy.

<<The reason they are doing this is because it is cheaper and easier, and the people making these decisions are severly lacking in talent.>>

That and no one wants to take any risks. Corporate America is not very forgiving of failure these days.

I actually like this idea!! (Don't hurt me!) Provided it is done right. Someone needs to ride Small World in Hong Kong and send us a video when it opens (is it open yet?)

I think it will give me something new to look forward to.

They put characters in The Mexico Boat ride in Epcot and it really changed it for the better. It gave spice to an otherwise boring montage of stuff.

Small World is of course much more then stuff, but it does get rather stale after awhile. This will make it a better attraction for the whole family to ride.

I won't knock this new addition until I've seen it. This could be a very good thing.

"What's the message you're supposed to get from IT'S A SMALL WORLD"

Actually, really, the message is "We're the children of the world, and we are all one people on one planet, so please, take care of it for us, and don't blow it up."

That is the actual message of the ride. While Pepsi sponsored it, all the profits made at the World's Fair for the ride went to UNICEF (try and picture them doing that today).

It was actually originally titled "It's a Small World - A Salute to UNICEF," and it's a message of hope from the children of the world for the people of the world.

But hey, that's old hat and boring. Let's put in something we can sell the suckers....

"remember when the same author wrote that Space Mountain was getting an Stitch overlay? "

No, I don't remember that one. He's quite often wrong about things, regardless of what people seem to think about his accuracy. I hope that is the case with this.

After viewing the ride in Paris, wow, that's really a major step up. I would love for them to do that sort of upgrade here.

"They put characters in The Mexico Boat ride in Epcot"

You know...this was the Mexican pavilion, and they put in characters from Brazil and the US...

I can see them doing characters in world showcase that highlight disney characters based from that country. But they at least ought to come from the country.

i have had a hard couple of days. i work for an airline and right now there is alot of change going on. i work at the ticket counter and there is alot of pressure to make everyone use kiosks. making us the workers have less to do. it is all very frustrating. so all this change is driving me crazy. i think it has colored my thinking on the whole small world changes.
i still not sure i will like the changes, but i guess we have to wait and see what happens. as my mother keeps reminding me what happens, happens. the only thing constant in life is change. hopefully the imagineers who are charge of this rennovation realize that small world is considered one of the flagships of disneyland and they have alot of people who are very protective over the ride (myself included).
i have to believe that if they add characters, it will be done allright. it will be interesting to see what small world hong kong looks like.

Despite my belief that this is still a great attraction and does not need to be changed, it does not make sense. If WDI wanted to put a Jack Sparrow inside of Star Tours, it would not make sense. Disney characters in SW do not make sense. I am personally hoping that this is all a big joke or an incorrect rumor.

If there are any WDI people that read this, please think about what you are doing. This is one of those things that people MAY come to accept over time, but really, can this possibly make this attraction any better. In my opinion, NO IT CANNOT!! And I think you will find that most of the people who are on this board do not want this change.

<<jonvn:
"yet the most popular new stuff didn't have any characters at all!"

This is the most annoying part of it. THey never are. THe most popular things in the parks are NOT character based. Yet they keep cramming them in there.>>

The funny thing is that Disneyland didn't even have any official "cartoon characters" (outside of Tinkerbell) in the park for about five years after opening. Disneyland was fine without them. Through the years, they slowly populated Fantasyland with the characters of the attractions represented there.

It's been the recent glut of characters that they have been adding everywhere that has been causing the consternation. There just comes a point where the constant addition of more and more cartoons just weakens the overall fiber of the Disneyland experience.

Chewbacca is a Wookiee from the planet Kashyyyk. But Chewbacca lives on the planet Endor. Now think about it; that does not make sense! Why would a Wookiee, an eight-foot tall Wookiee, want to live on Endor, with a bunch of two-foot tall Ewoks? That does not make sense! But more important, you have to ask yourself: What does this have to do with this ride? Nothing. Ladies and gentlemen, it has nothing to do with this ride! It does not make sense! Look at me. I'm a poster on a Disneyland message board, and I'm talkin' about Chewbacca! Does that make sense? Ladies and gentlemen, I am not making any sense! None of this makes sense! And so you have to remember, when you're judging characters in It's a Small World, does it make sense? No! Ladies and gentlemen of this supposed message board, it does not make sense! If Chewbacca lives on Endor, you must acquit!
