Columbia was proposed, as a patriotic reference and as a reference to the main river in the area. However, there was concern that Columbia would be confused with our nation's capital, the District of Columbia. So the name of Washington was chosen. Yes, that's right, the state of Washington was named to AVOID confusion with the name of our nation's capital.
