Oh, and we do have to be careful. I looked if we could go home to California for Christmas, the flights with Virgin were quoted at $10,000 - yikes!

<<< This book most certainly CAN be of value to repeat visitors.

I do believe he talked himself out of a sale, Malin, and that's unfortunate.

It's got some very strong points, and interesting tidbits, and all kinds of stuff that is useful for not only the first time visitor but also a repeat visitor looking for more. >>>

Thats good to hear Mr X, end of the day I am not a TDR expert, yeah I have been to the Resort a couple of times without the guide and have survived to tell the tale. But it still doesn't mean the guide wouldn't be of use to me. Its just a shame Kevin doesn't have a bit more confidence in the product himself, to be able to recomend it to someone like me. He seems to have some advantages to others who visit in knowing what its like to have the family in tow. From reading davewasbaloo post below it seems he could find this advice useful, and I do know Kevin has included a bit on his experiences. Personally I think the book should be aimed at the average fan like me and others who may or may not have visited the Resort who could gain experience and knowledge from reading this publication. I am very interested in how the final product turns out.

I just finished reading/editing the book. It's quite interesting and will, I think, be of interest to anyone who will or has visited the parks less than four or five times, or who traveled as a single person before, and will now be traveling with a family.
The version I've read most likely doesn't have the information from various other proofreaders, so there may be even more detail added before publication.

And speaking of "real" travel guide authors...

http://edition.cnn.com/2008/TR...dex.html

"A Lonely Planet author says he plagiarized or made up portions of the popular travel guidebooks and dealt drugs to supplement poor pay, an Australian newspaper reported Sunday."

"Thomas Kohnstamm, who has written a book on his misadventures, also said he didn't travel to Colombia to write the guidebook on the country because "they didn't pay me enough," The Daily Telegraph reported."

"I wrote the book in San Francisco [California]," he is quoted as saying in the Telegraph. "I got the information from a chick I was dating -- an intern in the Colombian Consulate."

So much for people bitching about Kevin cause he only went to the resort once. :p

Yeah, I read that bit about the Lonely Planet writer, too.

Thanks to those with the recent vote of confidence. A few comments:

1. As for vacationing with *no* research, that was quite explicitly the case for DCL, where they advertise "leave the rest to us". I did just that, and paid the price. In Tokyo, I went to the other extreme and did dozens of hours of research and STILL had things to learn when I landed, which was chronicled in this book.

2. As for being too self-deprecating, I can only say that I was conscious of not trying to sound like a know-it-all. The book really *isn't* a comprehensive guide to TDL/TDS. I don't know everything after just one visit and dozens of hours of research, and expert help from a half dozen online folks. But at the same time, yes, it's meant to be an "all in one" guide for folks visiting TDL for the first time.

3. Publication date: July 1, 2008 is the official date. I suppose Doobie may have it in stock a bit sooner, perhaps June 1, 2008. If needed before then, you could always email me (see miceage.com) for an individualized request.

As someone with some familiarity with publishing -- I've been approached twice about writing a WDW book (albeit NOT a guidebook in any sense of the term) -- I think experience can be vastly over-rated.

I recall being at WDW for a lage media party and talking to one author of a MAJOR WDW guide while sitting around the fire at DAK Lodge ... he had been to WDW a total of three times ... and his lack of knowledge about basics was really appaling.

FWIW, I'm looking forward to reading Kevin's book as someone about to take his first trip to TDR!

I have also e-mailed Kevin several times and have not heard anything. Kevin, sent you back the corrected book and a cover letter. If you read this and haven't received my e-mails, please e-mail me with a phone number where you can be reached.
