***But maybe they will grow up to be president***

Unfortunately, I doubt all the "full grown people with simple little minds" would allow that to come to pass.

The "non-traditional" issue would get trotted out, for sure, and the candidate in question would be tainted by it.

But we can always hope people would've outgrown such small minded prejudice by then (I'm an eternal optimist, after all).

>> You know that Bible that you think so highly of?<<

>>but it really tweeks me when I see the religion driven bigotry against helpless confused young people<<

I have my doubts whether it's really religion that's the crux of the problem. Some of you know that I'm Christian, in spite of this rather misleading screen name. The more I read this, my minds keeps wandering back to Mark 12:31 The second is this: 'Love your neighbor as yourself'. The God I know is a God of love, not hatred nor bigotry. I've already said by piece and have my own beliefs and opinions. They just happen to differ from a few of the other posters here. I respect their right to their own opinions but wonder if they would feel the same if the transgendered were someone close to them, someone that they loved.

Mr X, I'm just a little older than you, when I look back and see the changes that have taken place in the last 50 years, I have to say that I'm an eternal optimist too. We've gotten a lot better but we still have a ways to go.

Dabob2:
>><A homosexual man does not insist I go along with his game.>

>>It's not a game, it's simply the way x-percentage of the population is.<<

<I'm sorry... by "game", I didn't mean to imply that a gay man is playing at being gay.>

What did you mean by "game," then?

<<I know a couple of Lesbian couples who have children. Newsflash: they didn't say to each other "hey, let's get inseminated so we can deprive the resulting child of a father! How cool would that be?" Believe it or not, that was not their motivation.<<

<It is a necessary result of their action. Are you saying they were unaware that there would be no father in the home? While not their motivation, they did it intentionally. There was no way this was an "accident".>

Of course they conceived intentionally. But the intention was not to deprive anyone of a father. The intention was to have children for the same reasons straight couples have children. A straight couple where the father, say, is in a wheelchair don't "intentionally" bring a child into the world where they know the dad will never be able to play catch, play football, etc. with his son. They know that will be the case, but that's not the intention of having the child. See the difference?

>>But I think it's just common courtesy to call people what they prefer to be called<<

<Okay, from now on, please refer to me as His Royal Highness. ;-)>

Okay, HRH. If you're sincere about that, which I doubt.

(mele):

>>A little bit of kindness goes a long way...why refuse to be kind to a stranger?<<

(RC):
<I believe it is unkind to encourage people to remove perfectly healthy body parts.>

But it's already been done. Why be unkind to someone after the fact? Just to cleave to your ideology that this was something they shouldn't have done? Very bad manners at the least.

No Shiva, I don't think RC's opposition to this sort of thing is necessarily religious. I just meant that he is very vocal about his religion in other threads. He is also very vocal about his feelings that Christians are treated with much intolerance in today's society. I find that ironic considering his stubbornness and negativity towards others, yet he seems to think his beliefs and lifestyle should be given more respect.

What's more, it is his refusal to respect other lifestyles in the name of Christ that is precisely WHY Christian views aren't being tolerated as much.

As long Christians (and other religions, and intolerance in general) show a stubborn unwillingness to allow people to live the way they want (within legal boundaries and between consenting adults) their opinions will be more and more marginalized. I feel badly that good, loving Christians are being judged harshly but they need to clear out the zealots and put forth a more loving, tolerant image. (Which, btw, is what many intolerant right-wingers say about Islam.)

The Golden Rule trumps everything, IMO. If we ALL practiced it consistantly, this world would be a much happier place.

mele, I really don't see a point in arguing Christianity. I was on the other side on the fence for many years before I became a Christian and I don't expect my personal Epiphany as being valid for anyone else. What has bothered me my whole life is that I often see athiests and agnostics showing more of the "Christian" values than some of we Christians do. The Golden Rule is very similar to "Love they neighbor as thyself" and that was one of the two precepts that Jesus said the whole Ten Commandments were based on. I have also lived in the Mid-East and know exactly what you mean about how many followers of Islam are percieved, my own experiences are quite different. As far as "clearing out the zealots and put forth a more loving, tolerant image", I think that would win more converts than all the senseless arguing. It's also the image that I would like for my own personal life. I'm still a work in progress.

I'm not really arguing for or against Christianity, just trying to show RC that if he wants people to respect his belief (which he has stated is Christianity), he needs to respect others' beliefs.

Thankfully, there are many, many loving Christians (and people of all walks of life) who realize this. I'm glad you are one of them. :-)

>>I'm not really arguing for or against Christianity<<

mele, I didn't mean that for you. I knew exactly what you meant. I was just saying that it doesn't serve much of a purpose to argue about religion. There's no way of proving who's right or wrong and usually seems to create more negativity than anything productive. One of the things I love about LP is that so many of us are not all that judgemental. I believe in respecting people, period. Their lifestyles and religous beliefs are just as real to them as mine are to me. Thank-you for that compliment too : ) ...now do me a favor and grab that spotted doggy.
