Addressing briefly the clown issue. I think there are two issues for me with clowns. I don't have a problem with clowns that have a natural looking face. It's clowns with whiteface that freak me out. They look like walking corpses to me and add the big red painted mouth; it looks like they've just been feeding and haven't wiped the blood off. I think the second thing that bothers me is that by painting the expression on their face, it hides their real feelings and thoughts.

So, clowns with more natural warmer faces: not so bad. Clowns with white faces, big painted on eyes, mouths and big noses: AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH!!!!!

John Wayne Gacy really didn't help either.

Now back to the Spud...

I guess now wouldn't be the best time to recall the terrifying "Poltergeist" clown doll that sat RIGHT... NEXT... TO... THE... CHILD's... BED.

OH, wonderingalice ! That part of the movie was THE worst for me ! I was a young kid still and THAT scared me ! I also stopped swimming in the ocean after "Jaws" came out, and stopped sleeping with my legs or arms hanging over the edge of the bed after my best friend told me a creepy man comes around every hour, and whatever body part is hanging over the edge of the bed, he cuts off ! I was 12 when she told me this, and here, at 39, I STILL am pretty creeped out about that ! LOL !

p.s. --- yes, we are STILL best friends --- why, I am not sure.... LOL !!!!!!!!

For what it's worth, a study was released in the fall (I think it was discussed somewhere on the LP boards) saying that something like 90% of people claim to have a fear of clowns. No I don't remember the exact number, but it was definately over 75%, and we still subject ourselves and our children to them, year after year.

As for the creepy faces, I've heard it goes back to Roman jesters. At the gladiator events, they would go down after an event finished, and remove the face of the loser (who would be dead at that point), and put it over his face and make jokes from there. This is why there are the red spots around the eyes, nose, and mouth, and they are just generally creepy as all get out!

Here it is! It was done by the University of Sheffield, and it surveyed 250 kids, ages 4-16 (some of which were pretty old and should "know better"), and every single one of them admitted to being afraid of clowns.

When I wake up screaming in the middle of the night, it's your fault.
