Having participated in local theater for a long time, it's interesting to see the 'rush to opening night.' Actors always feel 'we could have used another week.'

Set designers will sometimes say: 'Well, we can finish that after opening night.'

While I'm sure most of the time the good intentions are there, in my experience, the set that exists on opening night is the set that will be for the run of the show.

And so it goes with things like The Hyperion Theater at DCA and the 'de-constructed' lobby and waiting area [ie: the bull pen]. It'll never get a new waiting area, and that ugly staircase leading into the upper seating area will be there forever.

If The Carthay Circle theater opens with nothing more than a facade, then, in my experience, it'll remain a facade.

And if it really is being planned that way -- may I just say, what an incredibly weird idea...

>>Since Seasons of the Vine and the Whoopi show are closing the argument that a new Disney Story at DCA is one too many theaters shows doesn't make sense.<<

That is certainly one way to look at it. Another is those two shows were attended only be a very small percentage of DCA guests thereby demonstrating the lack of interest in such attractions.

That second perspective, btw, is one I don't believe. Quality will out, as it has been said. A good theater show will pack them in, a bad one will be poorly attended.

I do believe, however, that an updated WD Story belongs across the esplanade. Anchoring DCA's new icon with Walt seems like a well intended but improper solution to a challenging situation. I'm happy to have a *temporary* empty building that would eventually be home to a more creative idea.

Re msg 21, I thought they were fixing the Hyperion as part of the 5-year plan.

HEY BEAN: is that still part of the budget?

..and if it isn't, then I share your concern, Jim.

Like what was said earlier, if the changes are finished and an empty building is there, it will stay empty.....

Yep - it seems to me that unless it has a toon in it, then DCA will not get it...

Where is the toon in Tower of Terror?

In light of what's happened in recent years, I totally understand the concern. But there is a new sheriff in town.

And (excuse me for sounding like a brat) wasn't there an 'empty' old mansion for a few years that turned out rather well. . .

Think about what could be done if given the time AND budget. I don't have an arial view of DCA handy, but I believe behind the proposed theater is the show building for Bug's Life, behind which is Bug's Land or whatever it is called. Those could be torn down to create one giant footprint for a massive E-ticket which could be home to the Spidey-killer ride system WDI keeps hinting they have. Now, *that's* an anchor for a park icon. . .

That's already built, I'm talking about the planned stuff. Plus there were plans in the early stage for a Toon Tower similar to the elevator scene with Droopy and Roger Rabbit.

i dont mind the fact that they dont want to put in a walt disney story. Fine. But i am worried they will keep this as another empty location for parties just like the old hollyood and dine and millionare buildings. I feel there are more empty spaces then there are theatre shows.

SO now we are Criticizing for plans they once had?

I am sure WDI has thouaands of plans that collect dust...Doesn't mean they are using them all.
