I have to say Mcloving and the cops were great but the rest of the film left much to be desired. If I want humor like that I'll watch the American Pie trilogy, the kept it reasonably decent compared to Super Bad which dug into the same well one to many times with the exact same jokes.

I'm not going to waste my time on such a film. Thanks for the heads-up, Jim.

I generally don't see R rated movies anyway...so I wouldn't have caught it.

<<Plus, the overall woman-hating tone of the movie -- awful, gross, disgusting.>>

But in the end it was the fat kid that ended up looking like a moron. The girl he wanted was a smart, reasonable and seemingly decent person.

<But in the end it was the fat kid that ended up looking like a moron. The girl he wanted was a smart, reasonable and seemingly decent person.>

I'm not sure I follow you. That chubby kid was a disgusting pig from the opening frame until the closing credits. absolutely unlikeable start to finish.

From a structural standpoint, what is his journey? How did he change? Why should we, as the audience, care about this little creep?

And why would that girl give him the time of day?

Truth is. She wouldn't.

I don't remember this movie comming out but based on this discussion I looked it up on IMDB to read some reviews. Roger Ebert gave it 3 and half stars!!!!! Now I am confused. ;)

I didn't say he changed Jim, I said the girl he wanted was the character you liked.

<<And why would that girl give him the time of day?

The good looking girl and tubby guy has been an entertainment staple for ten years now. I give you According to Jim.

Here's a review that sums up my overall feeling about this film:

http://dvdmg.com/superbad.shtml

But again if you're going for a recent comedy the two I mentioned earlier are much funnier efforts.

I think the point of this movie was that here's a couple of hopeless geeks who, rather than attempt to change, instead try and work their unfortunate place on the social pecking order to their advantage.

It's a "revenge" fantasy movie in a way. Here's a couple of guys who know there's nothing they can do to improve their lot, so they'll just be content being as many girls' "mistake" as possible. Can't beat 'em, join 'em kind of thing.

The point of the movie isn't so much if they'll change, but rather, whether or not they'll succeed in what they set out to do. It's gross-out humor, and it's a one-dimensional view of women (and men) but in what it set out to be, I thought it worked.

It's some ranchy, low brow laughs, but it's not the kind of movie that offers a lot of stuff to think about later.

DAR, I'm not attacking your comments, I'm seriously interested in discussing this movie. Hope you'll continue to respond.

<I said the girl he wanted was the character you liked.>

I didn't like her. The two girls -- the tall redhead who wanted chubby boy to buy booze for the party -- and the other girl who got drunk and threw up in the bed with the other guy -- they're just as gross as our 'heroes.'

<The good looking girl and tubby guy has been an entertainment staple for ten years now. I give you According to Jim.>

Perhaps it works in 'According to Jim' or 'George Lopez' or 'The Honeymooners' because the men are not complete loser jerks.

And Daannzz -- this movie got all kinds of critical acclaim -- that's why I wanted to see it in the first place.

Then again, I usually avoid this kind of stuff. Never saw the 'American Pie' movies, hated 'Something about Marie' -- so why should I be surprised?

Jim did you ever see Knocked Up or The 40 Year Old Virgin?
