>>>I don't know how interesting it would be to non-Americans <<<

But I am American - heck, better than that, I'm Californian.

Thanks for the tips though

"But I am American - heck, better than that, I'm Californian."

I knew you were American, but I don't know how interesting that stuff would be for your kids (who are probably a lot more British than most kids). I think my first visit to DC was when I was about 6, and we spent several days in the Air and Space Museum. That's definately a must-do for those with boys in tow. It's not terribly America-centric, so it would probably be a safe bet that they could relate to it.

I also highly recommend the Halocaust Museum, but I don't know how that would work with kids. It's very well done, but quite an intense experience, so I'm not really sure how younger people would react to it.

Actually, my kids got a kick out of the Missions and museums in Nor Cal.

Well, in that case, I guess DC (and Williamsburg) would be a great place to go. It's one of my favorite places to visit (not sure if I'd want to live there, but my brother goes to school there and he loves it), since there's just soooo many things to do...and they're free!

Williamsburg is about an hour's drive east of Richmond. And Busch Gardens Europe is definitely among my favorite non-Disney theme parks. Very beautiful with great theming and selection of attractions for the whole family. Colonial Williamsburg is also very entertaining, in an historic context of course.

As for Myrtle Beach, it's very 'honky-tonk' in the way it developed. Lots of mini-golf, go-karts, wax-museums, etc with mile after mile of hotels, bars, and restaurants. If you want 'old-fashioned' type amusement thrills, check out the nearby Family Kingdom amusement park. The wooden Swamp Fox coaster is a lot of fun, and you won't break the bank visiting here. You also won't need to spend a whole day there, either, like you probably will with Hard Rock Park. And HRP looks incredibly awesome! It's definitely on our list to visit, possibly for 2009.

Hey, dshyates and others, saw your reference to our review of Zepp and just wanted to let you know a podcast of the first ride and of the first day "sound check" of the park is up at our site at http://www.rexandthebeast.com (as well as a number of pictures from the day). I think HRP really adds to the Myrtle Beach area, it will be interesting to see how it is accepted by the area and the tourists.
