Perhaps this has been posted here before, however, today, I saw for the first time, the amazing Toy Story Zoetrope animation exhibit in the Animation Bldg in DCA. If you have never seen this, it is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen in a Disney theme park.

This video does not do it justice (because the from rate of most video cameras are 30 frames per seconds, it causes an odd flicker)

See it LIVE next time you visit. Unreal.

I agree that it's definately one of the coolest things I've seen them do in quite a while. It's not a spectacle like so many thing they do these days (like Remember or Fantasmic!), but instead, it's just really amazing because of how simple, yet how complex, the whole thing is. I've always sort of understood how animation worked with the 2D zoetropes, where you look through the little slits on the rim, but it wasn't until I saw this that I really fully understood how they put the whole thing together and make it work with the projector and all. There's just something about seeing it in 3D, with seperate strobes that made me have one of those "Ah Ha!" moments.

Part of what's so impressive about this is how many different things are going on, and they all work. I think the only one that's a little gimmicky is the parachuters, but even that looks really cool once it's up to full speed. It's also the only one that you can watch before the strobe starts going and get a good idea of how the spinning makes everything line up. I also really like the penguins, and how they really seem to travel all over the place. The other figures all stay in one spot, for the most part (Buzz kind of looks like he's traveling around), but the penguins really look like they're moving between the positions. It's a very impressive part of an already impressive exhibit.

I don't remember the music and sound effects (squishy noises for bouncing penguins), so that was a nice addition. I still wish they had some way to know how long it would be until the next 'performance', even if it was something as simple as the music starting a little early to get people's attention. Other than that, it really is a great display, and I hope to visit it on Friday!

Amen brother. It is, from here on out, a MUST DCA see whenever I head into the park with new friends.

Also, I love the martian bouncing on the teeter boards. And, one of the characters that sink into the display, with the cool shadow.

I stood there and watched this five times in a row (it runs every minute, stops for a minute)

Must, must see (I also noted that Epcot has it somewhere, which is great for East Coast. I wonder where in Epcot?)

I really loved this. It's one of those "little" but ultra-cool things Disney used to have all over their parks.

I can't believe I spent a day at DCA and forgot to check this out!

Boy am I stupid!

It was the most fun I ever had at DCA though.

Here is a better video with less flicker. It does a good job of showing the "little green men" and the penguins jumping around.

Yes! This is definitely a MUST SEE!
My husband and I must have watched this
everyday that we were there! Just amazing to see how it's all done!
I wonder if they change it to display other Disney/Pixar movies?

^^ Lasseter said on the official DL podcast a couple months ago that will remain permanently at DCA. They had two made - the one at Pixar HQ and the one for DCA.
All times are Pacific Time (US)
