I was going to start a separate topic for this, but I figured this was a good spot to post.

I'm a DC person, and as such I find it frustrating that there have been relatively few successes in terms of movie adaptations of DC stuff. Marvel, between the X-Men and Spider-Man movies (and now with Iron Man), performs better than DC.

Why does DC come behind Marvel in this area?

All arguments aside about which company writes better comics, there is, I believe, one simple reason for this: DC is owned by Time-Warner.

Over the years, having read interviews with various DC professionals and hearing them speak at the few comic conventions I've attended, it seems nobody there is terribly happy about the process of making a DC property into a feature. I wouldn't know the specifics behind-the-scenes, but Warner has control over the properties, and they're going to do what they can to exploit the built-in demographic of comic book readers: "We'll make a crap movie, but it'll make some money because the schmoes will pay to see it the first weekend."

Marvel has total control over its characters and properties. They can nurture a project from beginning to end whereas DC has the Big WB looking over its shoulder. Marvel has been pretty adept at making movies that please the fan base and bring in other viewers. DC wants to push radical changes to make a movie more "marketable." Even the more mediocre movies like "The Punisher" and "Ghost Rider" turned out better than "Steel" and "Catwoman." (But for the record, I found "Catwoman" a lot of bad fun.)

I've read interviews with Neil Gaiman over the years and one of the most common questions he gets has to do with movies based on his Sandman series. He's loathe to allow it because Warner wants to force so many changes on them. I wonder if they'd fare better as direct-to-video movies like the excellent "Justice League: The New Frontier" movie?

And speaking of which, I truly hope this "Justice League" live action movie bites the dust.

Thoughts?

It's hard to say, you'd think that they'd at least try to follow the model they set for Batman Begins and the Dark Knight(at least from what I'm reading).

I think Batman Begins was a real risk that paid off, but the recent Superman movie was a step back.

WB just doesn't care enough to do it right. If the DC people had more control, I think we'd see better movies.

As happy as I am that Marvel is doing well. I am geeking out over the Dark Knight I am pins and needles for this thing. And I'm hearing that it might run around 2hrs and 45 minutes. Which might be long but I think Batman deserves an epic story.

Well I gave in and purchased Final Crisis Issue 1 even though I was done with the D.C. Crisis. But here's what I've been reading lately:

Marvel: Secret Invasion, Captain America, The New Avengers and Mighty Avengers.

D.C.: Final Crisis and Green Lantern.

As for the best title it's either Captain America or Green Lantern.

I'm going to wait for Final Crisis to be collected before I read it. Actually, I think I'm going to be doing this a lot more from now on. Trinity is another one I'll wait for.

I still haven't read DC Universe #0, but of course I know the "big secret" from that already. *sigh*

I'm eagerly awaiting a copy of the first STARMAN omnibus. I have the individual comics but I'd rather have books that will take up less space than the individual comics. This is a series I definitely want to come back to again and again. Did you read it?

I loved Starman, but I have about 75% of the run. I'm not sure I'm willing to spend a bunch of money to get the other 25%.

I'm kind of enjoying Secret Invasion, but I'm really leery of how it's going to work out.

Anyone else read Astonishing X-Men? The last of Joss Wheadon's run, issue 25, came out last week, and now Warren Ellis is going to be writing it. I really enjoyed Joss' run, but I have no clue where Ellis is going to take it. He's admittedly not a fan of superheroes, and he's picking up one of Marvel's biggest, most popular superhero titles. I hope he does it well. I'll at least give it a few issues, but I may end up dropping this title off my pull list.

I pick up quite a few titles every month, but the ones I consistently look forward to are Fables, Jack of Fables, X-Factor, and The Incredible Hercules. I didn't know what to think when they replaced Hulk with Hercules, but it has been a true joy to read each month. I hope they keep him in his own title.

I've never read it but I'll peruse when I go to the comic store.

I am too, but there's something about Lenil Yu's art I just don't like.

I have to admit I don't understand the cult of Joss Whedon. I think he's decent but I don't go crazy over him. Ellis is a different cat but I loved Planetary.

Fables I wait until the trades which the new one is out today. I've heard a lot of good things about Hercules.

Another thing on iTunes go to the IGN Entertainment podcasts and they have a new comic book podcast. Really good stuff.

Yesterday I picked up Secret Invasion 3, Ultimate Origins 1, Trinity and Batman 677 RIP even though I swore off the big superheroes these books piqued my interest. And I picked up the Fables trade.
