I never dreamed that this movie would do as badly as it has. With all the media hype and marketing it was receiving, I thought for sure it would have been a 'modest' hit at the very least. I guess that the movie is about 20 years too late coming out for the Speed Racer fans from the 60s-70s like I was as a kid. Funny thing is that some critics found the movie exhilirating and loved the artistic style of the movie. I still plan on seeing it myself this weekend with my son who is really excited to see it. I'll make my own decision then if I liked it or not, not from other people's reviews.

I really liked this movie it kept me entertained the whole time! I wasn't sure how they were going to do the cartoon to real life thing and the previews didn't really interest me to tell you the truth. I really liked the movie, the racing scenes, very cool! I loved that they made it look kind of cartoony. I sat there imagining the story line as the cartoon the whole and it worked for me. I'm in the minority here and I don't care. I'm taking my nephews to see it this weekend. Chim Chim was a hoot! LOL I want those monkey pajamas!!

I saw the movie tonight. It was, ummm, interesting. Better than I thought it would be, but I can see why it's not doing well. Very disjointed and hard to follow. My 10 year old son LOVED it (as I thought he would). He kept comparing the various race tracks to different Hot Wheels sets, which is exactly what some of them looked like. Me, I found some of the references to the old TV show nostalgic, but, the movie does go over the top...WAY over the top in some cases. The 'eye candy' background scenes were extremely different from any other movie I have ever seen, but it definitely suffered from 'sensory overload'. Just way too much happening to take it all in. I'm sure I'll see more of it when the DVD comes out as my son already is asking for it, along with a few Mach 5 toys and other cars from the movie. Overall, I'd give it a C-. Certainly not a great movie, but far from being terrible. I'm sure I'll watch it again when my son gets the DVD to catch some of what I missed.

Last time I will rub it in, I swear, Speed Racer dropped a remarkable 58% this weekend, bringing it's total to $7,645,000

The movie crashed and burned hard....

To paraphrase the Old Man from "A Christmas Story": "This [movie] isn't bad...it's not really *good* either..."

It was fun for a bit but got really, really tedious very, very quickly. Still, I appreciated some of the effort made to translate the look and feel of the cartoon for the screen and sometimes it worked.

The Wachowskis really need to rethink their next movies. I'd rather see them go back to doing things like "Bound" instead of "The Matrix."

There's no question that this movie 'crashed and burned hard' at the box office. Still, I didn't feel that it totally deserved that fate, either. I didn't love the movie, but I certainly didn't hate it, either. It deserved a little more attention than it got, if just for the technical values of the film. Perhaps a little more story telling and a little less 'Huh? What just happened?' might have helped, along with eliminating that last race. The rugged cross country race should have been THE main and final race for the film, not the Hot Wheel's speed set #3 that they used. (For those that are interested, there were four main races featured in the film that Speed races in. Definitely one two many!)

Yes, it could have been better. But, I'm really surprised that it bombed as bad as it did.

I just hope eventually we'll see better releases of the cartoon show. The current sets are annoyingly time-compressed.
All times are Pacific Time (US)
