My opinion: not the end of the world.

But.

Where they're subtle they don't add a thing. And where they're not subtle they're distracting and make the mind go immediately to "there's Disney going for synergy/marketing again," which takes one out of the "iasw mindset," if you will.

So I don't think they ruined it. But I think they "minused" it.

Yes! This is where WDI failed and why theyve been dialing 911 for 3 weeks. The 'subltle' ones (Pinoc, LK characters, Jungle, Pocha, Ariel) are completly worthless. You just wouldnt know they are those characters unless you knew before hand they were going to be there. And the blatant ones (Cindy, Ali, Lilo) are completly distracting and take AWAY from the whats going on.

I wouldn't mind seeing the numbers move in and out like in HKDL's version. The ride does lack.

oh gosh, i think i am going to get branded "defender of mediocre". i saw the you tube video. it really doesn't look all that different from the disneyland small world we have seen for 40 years. yes there are disney characters but in my humble opinion it is not as bad as i thought.
i agree they should tone down bibbi boddi boo and a whole new world. but the rest i can't complain about.
The asia scene is truly beautiful. i love the boat in the scene.
also the rain forest with its umbrella crocodile and and the drummers are featured in this version. so it looks like even they move it, it will remain in the dl version.
even the cowboy is in the hong kong version.
i hope the disneyland version doesn't add the characters or song interludes, but if it does c'est la vie. small world will always remain my favorite attraction.
of course i like tarzan's tree house and disneyland's winnie the pooh!!

Yeah, just saw it as well and honestly, it doesn't look all that bad to me, but I never had a HUGE problem with the characters being there because I really just not all that interested in the ride in general (but manage to ride it at least once on a trip lol). Its the ENTIRE character issue in general that bothers me and yeah IASW isn't helping!

With that said, I don't really see how the message gets 'lost' all of a sudden just because you happen to know who Woody is in the American section? I WILL agree though, for HKDL specifically, its a little odd to put these characters in that most people probably won't know all that much minus the Pixar ones and while Disney tried to make many of them subtle (I litterally only caught a few, but it probably because of the grainey video and the camera can't catch everything) what's the point of trying to promote them to this new audience while 'hiding' some of them at the same time? They aren't going to catch the characters from the Lion King anymore than the other non-based characters unless they know who Simba already is.

So, its a little odd, on one hand the characters are there to promote them, but then they are so infused in the background and out of context of the films they came from, NO ONE is going to catch them unless they know who they are to begin with---obviously that won't be a problem with DL's additions though.

Anyway, I like it, think its cute. Sorry, that's really as far as this goes with me guys lol. I guess I can be more outraged about this as others, but I witnessed a small Anti-North Korea demonstration in Seoul just last week over the North's recent remarks concerning the South and the nuclear weapons issue, so yeah, priorities lol.

That is so cute! That ride is just like Disneyland's version. I can't wait until they change the ride!

more and more videos are popping up on you tube of small world hong kong.
watching the different videos, i really don't see that much difference. i don't think the characters distract from the overall show.
also if they add things from hong kong, i hope they add the little reindeer in the nordic section sliding around on the ice. he is so cute. i also hope they add the israel section and yes even the america section.
it doesn't seem to be up with america, but instead just another country in the world. as i said before the asia section is extremely beautiful hopefully they add some of the features in this section to dl small world.
i also like the changing lighting.
however the videos make me sad in one sence. it makes me realize how much i miss this attraction. disneyland visits are just not the same without it and hearing the wonderful ticktock. what ever changes, it doesn't look like it will take away the fact that it is a wonderfully delightful and memorable attraction!

Hi Dresswhites, I just watched a few more videos as well and agree with you. It really doesn't take away from the overall message at all. The only thing that was distracting for me was watching some of the characters seeming slightly out of place like Pochohontas in the Canadian section. LOL, talking about shoehorning!

But overall, its looks really nice and very colorful. One of the posters made a point of having some of the Disney music overlay with IASW world song, I had a hard time of hearing those sections. Maybe it just comes off more muddled on the video for me. Anyway, its a nice addition IMO. Even though its 'controversial' for the US parks, for HKDL, most will probably just see it as a plus and I doubt most would even know about this being a issue in America.

Is it just me, or compared to Disneyland USA are there about 150 dolls and 6 or 7 minutes missing from this Hong Kong version?

The sets seem so squished together, and in every major continent scene there seems to be a dozen or two dozen missing dolls. It's like a 5/8th's scale version of the real Small World, after the budget for animatronic dolls ran out halfway through the project. That's just lame.

The audio sounds nice though, almost like a direct lift from the Anaheim 1966 version currently in use. Even the safety spiels at the beginning are from Anaheim. While the sets are small, underwhelming, squished together with very little transition flume, and missing many dolls, the overall art direction looks good though. There's a few touches that seem modern and retouched, but a lot of it has the look of classic 1964 World's Fair or 1966 Disneyland installation. Bravo to WDI for getting at least that right.

And the other nice thing is that Hong Kong got a proper clock out front with a full show every 15 minutes. The WDW remake is just pathetic when it comes to their Anaheim ripoff facade and cornball clock show. Although I prefer the white and gold Anaheim color scheme over this modified pastel look Hong Kong got on their exterior facade.

The Disney Character issue aside, I give the Hong Kong version a 6 out of 10. They got jipped when it comes to ride length, the scale and scope of each artistic scene, and the small amount of actual dolls and eye candy to look at. But it's a truer version of the superior Anaheim original, instead of going for the unfortunate 1971 remake that WDW and Tokyo got.

You can tell that WDI thinks the Anaheim version is the one to emulate, rather than the WDW copy. At least they know which version is best.

TP2000, I would argue that the DLP version is the best version overall, but it was the most expensive.
