>>The video does no justice for the lighting and overall presentation of the sets. The audio in the video is terrible and makes the music sound very bad.<<

Agree with you to a certain extent about the video. It's no substitute for being there. But the audio, bad as it is, can't create discordant notes where there aren't any. It's a digital recording, and will deliver the correct pitches unless deliberately manipulated. Setting aside the relative levels (which are easily fixed), there's just no way to simultaneously play IASW and most other songs and make it sound pleasing.

What color is he really?

No Darby O Gill in the Ireland section, they are depriving the Chinese of a classic! :-)

The ride looks great. The whole "sky is falling" uproar over the characters being added to this ride are completely unfounded. There are bigger issues at DLR to be concerned with than this.

I'm just really confused about so many different things with this ride that I'm not entirely sure I want to get upset about it quite yet.

First off, the staging of the whole thing is very strange. I can't think of a single thing missing from the DL version that they don't have here (other than class-too soon?) but this version seems to have everything closer to the flume. Because of this, the sets are all very linear, without much depth from the boats. While not really the end of the world, it gives you less to look for after a couple trips. It also makes the sets in general a little disjointed (especially in Europe) by just sticking things randomly next to each other. This also leads to the feeling that the entire thing is a lot smaller, even if it isn't really.

Second, the music sounds horrible from all the different versions. I don't know if it's just because I'm not used to hearing the Chinese version of it, but the whole ride sounds really muddy and out of balance. Then you throw in the random Disney tunes, and it's just a you-know-what show. Some of the songs are recognizable if you already know them (Bibbidi-bibbidi-boo), but most are just hidden under the other noises and are so distorted to try to fit (Under the Sea and A Whole New World), that they just don't work at all.

And finally, the finale room just doesn't work at all for me. It's way too small, and not uniform enough. Sure, it's nice to have some more colors in the sets, but what made the original work was that the details (the design of the costumes) were different for each doll, but they all had the same overall look. When you make the set different colors, it starts to take away that message. Also, the spinning flowers on the ceiling are nice, but it directs your attention up, which is the last place it should be. The scene is way too small to really make it an adequate finale (not to mention the basement that they're loading and unloading in), and is just sort of generally sub-par. I'm also not familiar enough with the culture to really know this, but it seems like they might run into problems with the amusement park look, since they're already jamming characters at us. It makes it look like we're all the same people at HKDL when the characters are with us, which is really not what the ride is meant to be.

Overall, I don't mind the characters as much as I thought I would (but that is with the propoganda video first), but they are still not great. There are so many areas where this attraction fails to live up to its possibility, which is really a bigger problem to me than just a poorly concieved attraction. It's a great premise, but they really screwed things up across the board on this one.

I agree with the depth and scale of the sets FerretAfros. That's exactly what I was getting at when I said it seemed like a 5/8th's scale version of the real ride.

The finale' is a huge let down.

And seriously, there's about a hundred dolls missing compared to the Anaheim version. At least a hundred, maybe around a hundred and fifty. It's not all because of the smaller sets and reduced scope either, there's just missing dolls throughout the ride.

The load/unload area is odd. It reminds me of the 1960's CircleVision lobby. But since it's 2008 and this is supposed to be a happy, shiny boat ride, I'm not sure that's a good thing. I get they are trying to shield riders and the attraction vehicles from the harsh Hong Kong climate, but that loading area looks like a 60's modern airport lounge or something. Weird.

Are there any pics/video of the queue and load/unlaod? I have not seen any.

This video shows the unloading area at the very end of it:

>>The whole "sky is falling" uproar over the characters being added to this ride are completely unfounded.<<

No, adding characters to the ride is part of the "larger issue" at DLR, so it isn't unfounded at all.

The focus of the ride now becomes the parlour game "Find the Disney character in each country" -- which wasn't the intent of it's a small world. As predicted, this clumsy addition muddles things up and becomes a distraction. Compounding it is the addition of the music. I hadn't given a lot of concern about the music, but in hearing it on the video, it's even worse than the addition of the characters.

Out of tune, out of sync, out of place.

No, the sky isn't falling, of course. Life goes on. But once again, if it's a small world has become dated, boring or irrelevant, dump it and come up with something fresh. But please, ham-fisted attempts to jazz it up such as this is lowest-common-denominator thinking at best.

""Out of tune, out of sync, out of place.""

Yes, the music is the WORST part and even worse than the characters. Completly takes you out of the attraction and does not fit.
