| imadisneygal Sat 4/26/2008 7:21p | All of our information from publicity, WDI, etc. when Indy opened indicated that Mara is male. Our tour was amended at the time to include that information. I had no idea that there was a question about it...hmm.... |

I think the issue came about after the reference to "the god Mara" was deleted from the spiel. I would also think that most people have a tendency to think of Mara as a feminine name and it doesn't help that, in some of the pictures, Mara has certain features that could easily be female. This is not unusual in Indian art, especially artwork of deities...please, no Google searches of Shiva.

| WDWdreamin Sat 4/26/2008 10:43p | I was one who thought Mara was a female, mostly from the name. I'm convinced otherwise now, Shiva. It didn't matter that much to me anyway.
Yes, I look into his' eyes. |

| The Goddess Mara Sun 5/25/2008 6:08p | You MUST look into my eyes. I've told everyone to tell you not to do it, and so you are immediately compelled to do it. Simple reverse psychology. |

Thanks Sis,

Goddess, that might be good advice if we're talking about Disney's latest press release about the new Monorails but Disney's Mara has always been male and this was well documented when the temple opened in 1995. The Western ear is geared to think of Mara as a feminine name but, in Sanskrit, gender is determined by how the last vowel is accented. None of this really matters because the temple's Mara is Disney's and they decided to make their Mara male.
My previous posts were solely intended to preserve DL historical accuracy. (I also get tweaked when I hear the urban legend about the basketball court in the Matterhorn) To tell you the truth, I was *very* surprised to learn that many thought that Disney's Mara was female. Like imadisneygal said, "I had no idea that there was a question about it.."
