Screamscape is reporting today that the spinning coaster rumored earlier may be back on, but instead of a Mad Rat coaster it will be themed to Cars, and may open in time for the opening of Cars Story 2 in 2012.
Is this Disney's counter punch that is supposed to put a hurting on snotter Potter? Pixar Place with Toy Story Mania and Lightening's Spin-Out coaster?

ORDDU: If this is true, it sort of makes Bob Iger look like a hypocrite because he said not everything has to be themed to a Disney movie and that was supposed to be why the RATATOUILLE theme was dropped. Yet, here they're merely substituting one movie for another. I suppose he must prefer cars over rats.

ORWEN: Not me! I'd much rather ride a rat themed attraction than a car themed ride.

Actually what Bob said was, "not everything has to be a franchise". I believe he was refering to the intellectual property of Ratatouille, and not the attractions themselves. What I got was that "Rat" wasn't as popular a property as to franchise it. Cars, on the otherhand is the #1 merchendise cash cow in the Pixar arsenel. "Rat", not so much. Cars Part Deux is already in the works. Carsland@DCA and WDS as synergistic tie-ins. Now DHS. Makes cents to me.

Doesn't WDW have a spinning mouse coaster already? I know this one is a bit different and may be inside but I just am shaking my head at the whole idea of it. It must be the upper eschelon dictating this through budget constraints. I can't imagine any good imagineer would actually choose this as the best route.

"I can't imagine any good imagineer would actually choose this as the best route."

Maybe they should run the plans up to Universal to ask one.

As nice as Primevil Whirl came out, who wouldn't want more of that. It really is what raises Disney above the likes of....ah.... the state fair?

Pretty lofty goals Disney has set for itself.

ORDDU: Didn't RATAOUILLE end up making more money than Cars? And doesn't Cars already have an attraction being built to honor it at DCA? And didn't RATAOUILLE win an Oscar for best animated film? I'd say it's already proven itself a better property than Cars--not that we have anything against Cars because we liked that movie, too. If Mr. Iger believes Cars is more popular than Ratatouille, it would have been more clear if he would have merely said that instead of saying whatever it was he DID say.

I'm not sure about the box office numbers, but I can say that CARS has been a HUGE success merchandise-wise. The CARS diecast toy car line alone has been a runaway hit for Mattel, to the degree that characters seen in the film for a few seconds are manufactured and sell out as soon as they hit store shelves.
