<<But Bob is so bad, any list of annoying singers is simply incomplete with him.>>

Too true. I think I'd put him at #2, move Celine Dion up to #3, give John Mayer a pass, and just move everyone else back a notch, as needed.

Unless Michael Stipe needs to be on there, too. I love REM. But Stipe is frequently unintelligible as a lead singer. I might get past that, but he's refused to clarify a number of mumbled lyrics and he's said in interviews that he doesn't feel the need to reveal to lowly listeners what he's actually singing about. B*** m*, Stipe.

Dylan's voice is no worse than Springsteen's.

How can they say that about Lily Allen? She's a wonderful, fresh-faced young talent, a true oasis of cheerfulness and creativity in a world of Disney channel teenyboppers doing wretched covers of boomer hits. These grumpy guys need to take a closer look and

"Dylan's voice is no worse than Springsteen's"

No, but his diction is. Saw him once at a festival and you couldn't understand a word he said. literally, not a single word. Not when he was singing. Not when he was trying to talk between songs. I literally did not understand a single word that came out of his mouth. And his pitch was so bad, that you couldn't even tell what song he was attemping to sing until the chorus rolled around. I was pretty funny. And even his die-hard fans were laughing at him. To this day, all I have to do is go up to one of my friends that were with me at the show, and make that nasally Bob Dylan-like sound while mumbling unintelligibly and they all bust up laughing.

Why isn't Sanjaya on the list? Oh, I see, you actually have to be considered a "singer" to make the list.

I haven't heard of half of these people, but I guess it's just as well.

It's interesting how opinions can vary so widely on stuff like this. I mean, I really absolutely, positively, unequivocally canNOT stand the "pop classical" performers like Josh Groban, Il Divo, Andrea Bocelli, et al, but I know people just fall all over themselves over them.

Me, I just don't care for "perfect" voices and the vocal histrionics of performers like Mariah Carey, Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera. I find beauty in imperfection, and it seems most of the singers that truly move me are those who don't have "good" voices, like Alan Sparhawk from Low or Kristin Hersh (formerly of Throwing Muses).

There's no accounting for taste, that's for sure. :)

What's funny about Dylan is if you read critics from the 60's, they LOVED his voice. Not just his songwriting, his singing. Seriously.

It was "authentic." It was "real." It was "gritty." They hated it when someone like Peter Paul and Mary or even the Byrds took a Dylan song and made it intelligible and even (gasp!) sound nice. That was "inauthentic," you see.

The even weirder thing is that nasal singsongy drone thing Dylan is known for IS put on. It's not his natural voice. I have a tape of him on the old Johnny Cash show where he sings "straight" and it's really not half bad. Even some of his records, like "Lay Lady Lay" have more of his natural voice.

And when he did "We Are the World," he initially sang his line straight and it didn't "sound like him" so Lionel Ritchie had to BEG him to sing it "like Bob Dylan." Ritchie apparently sang it FOR him the way "Dylan would do it" and made him sing it over and over till he got just the right Dylan inflection and it came out "It's TREEW we'll make a brighter DAY, just YEEEW and MEEEE." But apparently it was like pulling teeth to get him to sing it so that it was recognizable as him!

Listen to some Tom Waits and I will almost guarantee you'll think Bob Dylan is the best singer you've ever heard.

Waits reminds me of a drunk/strung-out Fat Albert.
