To answer the original question, I have absolutely no idea.

By definition I'd say heaven is a very nice place and hell is pain and suffering, but that's just what the books say right?

Nope, no clue. I believe neither actually exists, even if there is life after death.

Heaven consists of two parts: the final purification (purgatory) where all our "baggage" is released and afterward, the Beatific Vision. That is where we will be with God face to face and know Him as He knows Himself...perfect love and eternal joy.

Hell is the privation of all good as punishment for rejecting God. That means eternal torment and regret for choosing as they did. People will have a desire for God but will never be with Him and will hate Him for it. They will also hate themselves and everyone around them, even family members. Not a pretty place.

>>That means eternal torment and regret for choosing as they did.<<

That's a long time. Essentially, this means that a person's brief time on earth "makes or breaks" their eternal soul. Forever. I have a hard time accepting that concept.

And so they spend the rest of all time regretting the choices they made in this life and being punished for it. Why? If no one sees their suffering here on earth, how would we learn from that? How would the condemned soul learn from their mistakes?

We are here for a fraction of a second at best in relation to eternity. It seems awfully strict that God would give us the boot for all time for being all-too-human. Talk about holding a grudge!

Yeah, seems like we've attributed some really ugly human traits to God. If there's a God, I believe He is above that sort of behavior.

I can't really describe the sadness I feel when I think that that is really all this is about. :-(

I had admit, I never understand why ANYONE would want to live in this eternal wonderland for the next million years?? These concepts of afterlife and whatnot sound ridiculously dull to me. I admit though, I wouldn't want to go to hell, but at least it sounds like there is some pizazz there ;). Heaven sounds like, well, sterile and vapid, but I imagine scenic lol. But no, I'm with Kar2oonman, I do my time here and when that's it, that's it. Another million years being around people I can't stand in THIS short life will be hell no matter where you go.

Of course, I belive in a heaven or hell as much as I believe in a Republican universal health care plan, but if something like that did exist, I wish there was an opt-out version for people not interested (but I guess that would cancel out the point of hell lol), that would be okay. Of course, if I had to go for any of the more afterlife beliefs out there, I go Islam.

I mean, where else can I get a couple of virgins to have as my own ;). I mean, if there is no sex in heaven, then why the hell people want to get there so badly lol.

<if there is no sex in heaven>

I sure don't believe that.

Agreed, WD...and the funny thing is you keep saying "a million years", when actually a million years is just the blink of an eye compared to eternity.

When you really stop and think of it, eternal life of any kind is actually hell.

Unless you go with some sort of "mind-wipe" reincarnation thing, then it's okay I guess.

Well, belieeeeeve me, I hope I'm wrong ;). But everytime I hear descriptions of Heaven somewhere by some priest or something, it's always these vague abstracts like being on a higher plane of spirtual existance, having deeper connections with love ones, our souls being transformed into noncorpeal entities and blah, blah, blah!!!!

That all sounds nice and good, but I wish we get some direct anwsers, mainly question #1 for me: "Are we still DOING IT in this higher plane of spirtual existance??? And more importantly, do we get even better at it?"

That's what I want to know, but no one ever bothers to answer me lol. Look, if there IS sex and with this new form of existance (hopefully, everyone will look attractive and sexy, that would reeeaaally help ;)) then sign me up lol. I will be a believer in a huge way :D.

If not, then just keep me down here where at least my form of heaven is never taken away from me until death or Viagra runs out when I hit 80.....although sadly I haven't seen heaven very much lately :(.

Oh yeah Mr. X, you're right of course, the 'million years' thing is a blink of an eye. I mean man, I'm only 33 right now and man sometimes it felt like a long life already lol. Me and my mother has run out of things to talk about 5 years ago lol (except 'when will you find a girlfriend again and get married' Now THERE is the eternal question I imagine I would only get in hell lol). I love my mother more than life itself, but putting up with her for eternity, again E-T-E-R-N-I-T-Y isn't something that gets me all giddy inside. It sounds harsh, but yeah lol.

You know, the idea of eternity does warp my mind!! I use to think of endless time and endless space as a kid and it would litterally freak me out lol. I would just think of the universe and couldn't get over how something NEVER ends. There is no 'dead end' to the universe, it just goes on and on and on....forever, I mean, that's freaky. How does something like that NEVER stop??? There must be an endpoint somewhere, right? And then I think about time/eternity the same way and it freaks me out even more. How can you just never stop existing??? Just on and on for a hundred years, a thousand, a million, a billion, a trillion??? I mean what's a trillion times a trillion, apparently everyone's 'sweet 16' birthday year in the after life. I mean is THAT what people want? Me and my mother hanging out for a trillion years together, at least the first trillion until I had it and finally get the courage to move out of the basement ;).

And for the record, I don't want people to think I'm just making light out of all of this and I know this is VERY serious stuff for many in all faiths and beliefs, I do. But, this is **how** I think about this stuff. I honestly don't have a spirtual bone in my body, so when **I** think about eternal life, a higher connection and everything, this is how it always comes out in my head. Actually, part of the thought of an afterlife is what partly puts me off to religion in the first place lol. I guess I look at it too practical and too 'earthly', but how else are we suppose to? The thought of heaven is just as unappealing to me as hell is when I think it NEVER ENDS!!!! I mean, even the the things I love more on this planet: sex, rollercoaters, hamburgers, music and on and on all gets dull at some point, right? No matter how much we love something, we can't do it forever until we are sick to death of it by a certain point.

Disney is many of our fan version of heaven here, but I swear if I visited that place everyday for the next thousand years, I will throw myself in front of BTMRR by the the time the first 50 years were over. Or worse if I ended up in hell...that would be DCA of course ;).
