Heaven: A realm dwelt in by spirit creatures, incomprehensible to humans.

Hell: Sheol. The grave. Nonexistance.

Concern about boredom in eternity assumes that we would experience the passage of time in heaven just as we would on earth.

Why would that be the case? In a constantly expanding universe, where the passage of time slows as speed increases while at the same time our awareness of it ceases and we stop aging; why would we possibly experience time in heaven as we do here on earth?

I'm not sure what heaven is. I think to a large extent it is beyond human comprehension. But I believe it exists. And I believe that what we know about the universe concerning the interaction of time and speed supports the possibility of heaven existing.

A samurai warrior was walking down a dirt road when he encountered a Zen monk who seemed very much at peace. Moved by the monk's sense of serenity, the warrior stopped him and asked, "Teach me of heaven and hell."

The monk looked him in the eye and then turned his back to him and said, " I cannot teach a fool like you." The warrior was instantly filled with anger and reached for his sword. "That," said the monk with his back still turned, "is hell." The warrior's anger then left as quickly as it came and he pulled back his sword.

"And that," said the monk, "is heaven."

^^Wow, that's a nice take on the eternity thing Roadtrip :). You're right, maybe time and the passage of time would work differently and a trillion years with my mother wouldn't be so bad afterall ;).

Anyway, I just never could wrap around the idea of an after life in all honesty. Sure, I guess it would nice to have, but my thoughts on it has always been I didn't always exist before my birth (unless you go the past lives route of believers lol), so I don't presume I will exist again after my death. Every life on this planet has a cycle, that's the way it is. Dinosuars were here for millions of years, litterally 1,000 times longer than us humans been around thus far, one Michael Bay asteroid later and that was it---and yet I never hear of an after life for them?? Obviously they did their time here, why don't they catch more of a break?? In fact for no one else except us precious humans. For some odd reason, everything else 'just dies' on this planet, but we humans get to live on for all eternity because we know how to build things and on top of the food chain.

Sweet!

And yeah, the idea of past lives have been passed down from one civilazation to the next in religion and philosophy, so its something that's interesting to discuss. But as something real and tangible, that just something I don't think I can wrap my head around---I'll let people know my thoughts the day after I'm dead though ;).

#33 Roadtrip - you said it well. Time won't exist so it won't be an issue. Infinite is outside the realm of time in this case.

I have a wonderful little book also by Lee Strobel that I mentioned before that talks about scriptural interpretations of heaven. So of course I can't find it. Probably with my missing socks and earings. (I know we won't lose things in Heaven!) but I'm doing my best to recall what it said.

The author found scripture to back up the idea that we would have physical space in heaven, ("in my father's house there are many rooms")that we would be reunited with our loved ones, that there may be animals, that there will be many things to do, activities and services. That there will be awesome music. That being in the presence of God will be such an awesome and overwhelming experience, that just wrapping our brains around that will be a big thing.

There will not be sorrow, there will not be pain or envy or regret. There will be peace and security and unimaginable love.

He makes the case in this book that there may be food for pleasure (Jesus did eat with his friends and disciples after his resurrection) Our bodies will be changed, so their may not be sex or the desire for it, but there will be pleasure on all levels (physical being one of them).

We can't imagine beyond human comprehension, so I think it would be useless to really paint a picture of it.

Catholic tradition describes a place of cleansing or purifying called Purgatory. There is no scriptural basis for that. In fact, it goes somewhat against scripture, because it implies that we can earn heaven. We can't earn it - it is a gift of God's grace. According to scripture we only have the time we have while we are alive to make the difference after we die.

Hell is absolute and complete absence of God or God's grace. It is also hard to comprehend because no one has experienced that who is still alive. But I imagine that it would be pretty horrific.

I recently read another book called "90 minutes in heave" about a near death experience. Pretty interesting book.

But again, with the short time we have here, compared with forever, that seems a mighty long time to live in torment for whatever sins we commit here. And likewise, it's a mightly long time to be rewarded for whatever we do during our brief stay. It seems entirely out of proportion to me (and yes, in my limited human concept of "fairness" too).

Why would God not simply make people believers, or show Himself? Why the test? Why the mystery? Why so many different religions with differing theories and protocol and their own unique requirements outlining the necessary steps to get ointo heaven?

If heaven is a place beyond our human comprehension, why do we need to go through this physical realm for several decades (if we're lucky) rather than just having us appear, untainted, in heaven in the first place?

It's God's game. He gets to make the rules.

I think this earth life prepares us to be able to handle heaven. Not sure exactly how, though.

I imagine it's like dropping off a little baby in the middle of Disneyland. Being that little, the child wouldn't know how to enjoy it, or even be able to take care of itself. But let that child grow up and learn a thing or two, and then it would be like Heaven to the child who has learned.

I believe the purpose of life is to learn to be better people, learn how to have faith, and more than anything to learn to love one another.

I have never understood the importance of learning how to have faith. Once we're in heaven, why will we need it?

And learning to be better people is relative. If better in your mind includes better demonstrating dominion over the plant by drilling for oil in Alaska, I'm not sure everyone would agree.
