Do you believe that, EighthDwarf? What are your thoughts about the origin of man or our destiny?

Honestly, I don't know if I have any set beliefs at this point. I have a hard time believing that a kid born in Africa has the same possibilities of coming to know the "truth" as I do. I feel there is such a vast difference in life experiences in this short life that it would not be fair to base eternity on this short life alone.

And if my experience in the "pre-existance" led me tow here I am today, what about crack-babies? Or abortees? What did they do to deserve their lot in life?

I do believe in spiritual progression - that we should learn as much as we can in this life about eternal issues - but I am inclined to believe in a more eastern line of reasoning than western christianity-based religions.

And when I say "truth" above, I mean the truth as defined by christianity that encompasses the knoweldge required for salvation. Make sense?

"For those who might be confused: I believe that we all lived as spirits, as children of God, before we came to this Earth"

I'm curious as to where this belief comes from. I've never seen this before in any other Christian denominations. Is this unique to Mormons, and if so, where does it come from?

The Mormons have a lot of ideas that are unique to that group, to be sure.

As for the "lived as spirits" part though, I don't buy that any more than I buy into any of the other "cut and dried" answers about eternity...however, I do believe that life, itself, has no opposite and goes on forever (or at least, as long as this Universe exists)...as the opposite of death is actually birth (not life)...thus the idea that we existed in some form (or no form, perhaps) is not beyond my personal way of thinking.

As out there as the Mormons can be, in SOME ways their take on things makes a lot more sense to me than the mainstream christian stuff.

Also, Peters, and I'm sorry if this bothers any Mormons out there or whatever, but I firmly believe that they are definitely NOT a denomination of christianity much as they'd like to claim that they are.

If they are, then so is Muslim frankly. Both are certainly set far enough apart to deserve a separate distinction.

"they are definitely NOT a denomination of christianity"

I was trying to be polite, but in essence, I would agree with you.

Well, I'm not even saying it to be impolite either. As many know, I'm not a big fan of most christian denominations anyway. ;)

Thing is, it's all well and good that they throw out a mention to Jesus and thus claim to be christian, but their views of the afterlife (and before life) are utterly different. And thus it's no different than the fact that the Muslims recognize Jesus as a prophet. Not to mention all those "secret temple rituals", which are all well and good but certainly differ greatly from most Christian rituals. But I think it's convenient for the Mormons to claim to be Christian.

The big Mormon/Christian debate is more of a misunderstanding.

To "Mainstream Christianity," being "Christian" means sharing the same beliefs about the nature of God, the afterlife, and other doctrines.

To Mormons, being "Christian" means you believe in Christ, no matter what other doctrinal differences there are.

Is part of our soul's development, part of our "progression" the ability to accept that people sent to an eternity of torment is fair and just punishment?

I know we often hear "it's beyond our human comprehension." Maybe we are able to comprehend the reasoning for this eternal one-way ticket to suffering and it will all make perfect sense in the afterlife.

Because in the here and now, such a concept seems cosmically cruel and vengeful.
