We have really enjoyed going in September, after school is back in around the 16th or so only during the weekdays. We did miss the fireworks, Fantasmic, etc., but we did not care, it was sooo worth not having the crowds.

Yeah first week in January is awesome, the Christmas decor is still up-just skip new years, that's crazy... and be careful of going on MLK weekend 'cause that is nuts too. We made that mistake once ;)

About January...check the local school calendar. In 2006 we went January 1-9th and had NO crowds. In 2007 we did the same and had HORRENDOUS crowds. The local schools had off from Christmas until January 8th, instead of the week before Christmas through the 2nd. President Ford died and gave the Federal employees an extra long New Years' holiday.

As vacationers, we try for optimal no crowd times. We'll be there next week (yeah!). I'll let you know how we make out.

BTW, best advice we have heard is the earlier Disney is planning to close, the lighter the crowds they are expecting.

It's too soon for President's Day and Haunted Mansion and Small World are typically re-opened by then after the holiday makeovers. Although sometimes other things are closed and the park hours are shorter.

I'd say from whenever the school are back in in January to mid Februaruy is the deadest time, weekdays only, Saturday is never slow. Mid September through roughly December 15th or so is the second slowest time, weekdays only of course. (Granted, you'd skip Thanksgiving Weekend and the INSANITY that goes along with that.) Also in the middle there are the crowds for Halloween. I know they aren't as bad as Thanksgiving, but I have no idea how bad.

So, when kids are traditionally in school it's not too bad. When kids are out: the summer, the weekend, holiday and spring breaks it's going to go from somewhat crowded to really insane.

We went in early December last year and had no crowds. We got to ride all the rides we wanted to and only had to wait in 2 long lines, Nemo and Peter Pan. We waited 40 minutes in line for Peter Pan. After the ride, my kids said--"That's it? What a rip-off."
