<<we expect someday to allow every person who ever lived the the opportunity to either be baptized or accept a proxy baptism.>>

What does this mean?

No offense, but it's statements like this that scare people and make them think of your church as a cult or dangerous.

<<One can argue that in the larger (and more important) sense, all Christians are one, regardless of which denomination they belong to.>>

<Isn't that the idea behind the Catholic Church? Isn't catholic derived from the greek word for "universal"? I think the Catholic Church had every intention of being the lone Christian denomination - it's the other guys who had other ideas.>

Yes, that's one meaning of "Catholic," but I was referring to the idea that the oneness of Christians can arguably transcend denomination.

<What does this mean?>

Mele, I believe that baptism is a necessary step in reaching our full salvation. That it's necessary to be baptized by someone with God-given authority for them to enter into God's presence. I'd cite a bunch of scriptures, but no need.

A lot of Christians believe this or something similar, and often are ridiculed by it, because they point out all of the great people that have lived on the earth with no chance to even hear of Jesus Christ, let alone be baptized.

I believe that in the afterlife, EVERYONE will be given an opportunity to hear the gospel of Jesus Christ, especially if they didn't hear about it here. But since they aren't living in a body here on earth, they can't be baptized.

So, we do it for them. They can then accept the baptism or reject it. It's a service we do, and one of the main things we do in the LDS Temples.

<<How is that disavowing EVERYTHING Christians have done?>>

I meant every ceremony performed by the Christian authority of the time. Isn't it true that according to your beliefs every single baptism performed between the "apostasy" and the "restoration of the church" is invalid?? That essentially means that you believe Christianity was not able to save people for 1800 years.

If I am not correct in this let me know. But I'd say that's disavvowing a lot wouldn't you??

<<but we are grateful for the things that stuck around>>

I know you are. Without them you wouldn't have had anything to build on.

<<The LDS church has had an attitude of "Bring all the good you have, and see if we can add to it" for many, many years.>>

This may be true, but I don't reading that anywhere. In fact, I believe there are many quotes I can cite where early leaders of your church were less than enthusiastic about aligning themselves with Christianity at all.

But I know you don't wanna go there.

A lot of Christians believe what? That they need authority to baptize? Of course they do and they beleive they have had it for 2,000 years. You guys are the ones ridiculing them by telling them they didn't have the authority all along. C'mon josh....

Agreed. That is the way it should be. I don't think Christ intended to have thousands of denominations arguing against each other. Like I said earlier, I think his message was pretty simple. It's those who have come after him that have complicated it.

<A lot of Christians believe what?>

That baptism is necessary to live with God.

< You guys are the ones ridiculing them by telling them they didn't have the authority all along. C'mon josh....>

We don't "ridicule" any other churches for proclaiming our own. Not any more than other Christians believe that they are more correct than the Jews or Buddhists or Muslims. It's just different, not ridicule. C'mon, Dwarf...

So many of your complaints or arguments just don't hold water.
